Position description
The Director of the Life Sciences Incubator is responsible for running Mayo Clinic’s bio-incubator and its associated facilities. A successful candidate will, in collaboration with Mayo Clinic leaders, work to (i) evaluate current business opportunities and ideas, (ii) identify emerging capabilities, solutions and technologies, (iii) gain buy-in and support from physician leaders and industry partners, and (iv) advance a portfolio of innovation to market.
Detailed Job Responsibilities include:
- Lead the bio-incubator team to serve as an integral component of Mayo Clinic’s innovation strategy
- Build a pipeline of partners, start-ups and relationships based upon Mayo Clinic’s enterprise priorities
- Assist in the recruitment of innovative, dynamic and transformational inventors and companies
- Coach and mentor bio-incubator team members in the ongoing development of business skills
- Connect participating inventors or companies with Mayo Clinic know-how, mentorship and resources
- Facilitate occupancy of the bio-incubator space, including exploration of vendors and technologies in the market that could provide a solution or component of a solution
- Ensure that the bio-incubator’s focus and operations align with Mayo Clinic’s corporate strategies for market success and its ambitions for establishing a workplace culture of innovation
- Establish internal networks to ensure active engagement of Mayo Clinic leaders and business partners
- Assist in providing business mentorship to employees and external companies of strategic interest
- Create a framework for evaluating and prioritizing startup activity that translates internal business needs into tangible methods for attracting and developing companies of interest
- Pitch prioritized ideas or companies to senior executives to secure approval and funding to advance through the innovation process
- Establish tracking methods for reports and analysis of metrics as requested by Mayo Clinic leaders
- Other functions as necessary or as directed
Qualifications
MBA, or an advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., PhD, MD, JD)
Successful track records and at least five years of work experience, preferably in management consulting, corporate development, and/or finance
Demonstrated ability to lead large scale projects and develop effective networks, partnerships, and alliances both internally and externally in a resource constrained environment
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups including business, entrepreneurs, major corporations, universities, and economic development organizations
Additional qualifications
Demonstrated independent self-starter with willingness to be coached and mentored
Demonstrated ability to excel in lean environments where tasks can be ambiguous and complicated
Experience applying general business knowledge (finance, economics, and marketing) into transformational ideas for individuals or business entities
Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for improvement and build strategic relationships between areas, teams or departments to help achieve business goals
Ability to develop and maintain a network of business contacts, relationships with economic development professionals, potential mentors, entrepreneurs, investors, and business service providers across the region
Knowledge of general business administration principles
Knowledge of external financing mechanisms or government grant procedures
Ability to communicate effectively
