We are seeking a motivated Associate Director Computational Toxicologist for a scientific position in the Predictive & Investigative Toxicology Group within the Nonclinical Safety (NCS) function. The successful candidate will have strong computational (in silico, data sciences, chemoinfomatics) toxicology experience. She or he will have strong leadership, communication, and networking skills to support the global function. The principle scientist will apply computational toxicology and chemo-informatic approaches to preclinical safety assessment. She or he will apply modeling approaches to understand and improve drug de-risking and safety prediction in support of early pipeline decision making. This position can be based in Beerse, Belgium, Springhouse, PA or La Jolla, CA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and apply system biology and pathway analysis approaches for on/off-target safety assessment

  • Mine ‘omics data sets to influence preclinical species selection and understand compound-target associations and their functions at systems level including cell lines, tissues- in both diseased and healthy states.

  • Apply computational tools and machine learning for integrative analysis of multi-omics data for toxicogenomic or biomarker discovery for understanding organ toxicities

  • Ensure the application of the resulting capabilities to impact pipeline projects

  • Collaborate with R&D informatics to build omics data analysis pipeline and make computational solutions accessible to the end- users

  • Building QSAR, probabilistic and machine learning models to predict potential off-target activities of drugs, provide new mechanistic hypotheses and inform priorities for in-vitro and in-vivo assessment.
  • Extract large internal and external datasets, including data handling, processing and model building.
  • Contribute to progression of ongoing computational approaches, advanced machine learning and participate in the development of new solutions to be used in non-clinical safety.
  • Implement predictive toxicology approaches early-on to influence selection of high-quality chemical series
  • Build collaborative partnerships across NCS to address computational toxicology needs and gaps
  • Participate in or lead strategically aligned external groups relevant to computational toxicology.
  • Stay abreast with new developments in the field
  • Work adaptively and flexibly with colleagues across sites spanning the globe in Janssen R&D and NCS.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • PhD in toxicology, pharmacology, chemistry with experience in computational toxicology and/or chemoinformatics.
  • At least 8 years of work experience in pharmaceutical company (MS with 10 years or BS with 12 years exp in pharmaceutical company considered).
  • Established expertise in computational toxicology is required.
  • Proficiency in either Python, JavaScript, MatLab, or R is required
  • High performance computing is a plus
  • Familiarity with structured and unstructured data sources is required
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills with a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and invited presentations
  • Self-motivated with a high level of autonomy
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative mindset
  • Travel up to 20% both domestic and internationally is required
