Job Description

The role of a Scrum Master at Allstate Benefits is to guide and coach all stakeholders and participants involved with a scrum delivery ensuring the scrum ceremonies are executed correctly and that the team lives by the values and practices of scrum and agile within the Allstate Agile environment.

The Scrum Master will serve their scrum team(s) by ensuring that impediments to progress are removed while proactively collaborating with product owners and other contributors to understand thoroughly the backlog items, sprint and release objectives and the activities / dependencies required to deliver the agreed upon sprint deliverables.

The Scrum Master upholds, defends, coaches and mentors the agile practices and values. They are responsible for guiding the development of an agile team into a self‐organized, effective, development unit with a sustainable cadence. They ensure correct and timely execution of all scrum ceremonies such as Sprint Planning, Release Planning participation, Daily Stand-Ups, Stakeholder Demos, Sprint Retrospectives, and other related Agile meetings. The Scrum Master also guides Product Owners in developing, maintaining and grooming a Product Backlog, and identifies and manages dependencies. They review reports, analyze data and provides feedback to their teams in support of continual improvement efforts. They provide metrics and status to senior management and accurately represent status of the Scrum Team(s).


Key Responsibilities
  • Cultivate self-organizing, high performing teams through servant leadership and mentoring.
  • Facilitating getting the work done without coercion, assigning, or dictating the work.
  • Guide new and existing teams through the ‘Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing’ stages to reach and maintain a ‘High Performing’ status
  • Encourage, support, and guide continuous improvement of the team, its products and processes.
  • Resolve conflict through arbitration, negotiation, reasoned discussion, or escalation.
  • Willing and able to identify problems, impediments, dependencies, and other team dysfunctions, and then facilitate quick resolution.
  • Promote a safe environment where problems can be raised without apprehension, and with an emphasis on problem solving.
  • Proactively ensures that the development process is enabled by scrum/agile practices
  • Assessing maturity of the scrum team; coaching the team to higher levels of maturity, at a pace that is sustainable and comfortable for the team and organization
  • Upholds, defends, coaches and mentors agile values as expressed in the Agile Manifesto.
  • Works with one or two scrum teams.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Product Owners.
  • Able to work with and represent a wide variety of stakeholders that need to work with the team.
  • Ensures correct and timely execution of all scrum ceremonies such as Sprint Planning, Release Planning, Backlog Grooming, Daily Stand-Ups, Sprint Demos and Sprint Retrospectives
  • Guides Product Owner in developing, maintaining and grooming Product Backlog
  • Removes impediments/blockers in order to keep teams highly productive
  • Helps the team identify and manage dependencies with other internal or external teams
  • Provides metrics and status to senior management within Allstate Benefits status reporting structure
  • Skilled at creating a fully transparent development process that the teams embrace and all stakeholders gain visibility on how the backlog is being depleted to meet customer goals
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills
  • Experienced in developing close working relationships with all levels of management, especially the functional managers
  • Be an active participant in the greater Allstate Agile community, collaborating with other Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches throughout Allstate to leverage the enterprise ecosystem

Job Qualifications
  • College Degree preferred
  • Scrum Master certification required
  • 3-5 years Agile Scrum master experience
  • Experience with Insurance industry, particularly Voluntary Benefits (Preferred but not required)
  • Effective written/verbal communication and facilitation skills
  • Strong consultative, customer focus mindset
  • Solid knowledge of Jira
