Abbott Northwestern Hospital, located in south Minneapolis, is the largest not-for-profit hospital in the Twin Cities and is recognized as an ANCC Magnet-designated hospital. Responsibilities
- The Medical Director is the clinical leader who is primarily accountable to shape and implement clinical care and service initiatives that address the triple aim, while engaging physicians in improving work practices and care. The Medical Director represents the Department and the Clinical Service Line within the Hospital, Allina Health and the Community. In partnership with the site Department Manager, the Medical Director forms a leadership dyad which has overall accountability for quality, operational performance, and patient experience. In partnership with the CSL Leadership, the Medical Director is accountable at the sites for the employed and contracted psychiatrist practices as well as to provide input and to implement crucial Service Line strategies at the site.

Clinical and administrative quality accountabilities
- 50% Clinical assignment- inpatient or outpatient
- 50% administrative duties
- This position would have at least one clinical lead psychiatrist for either the inpatient or outpatient setting reporting to them.
- Clinical Care
- Oversee all mental health clinical activities at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Abbott is the largest mental health site in Allina, with 82 inpatient beds spanning adult and child, an adult and adolescent partial program, mental health hospital based clinics on the Abbott campus and the West Health campus, including psychology, psychiatry, and addiction services.
- Clinical oversight of inpatient and partial hospitalization nurse practitioners
- Coordinate admissions from within and outside the hospital
- Participate in the development of Allina performance expectations & site goals/metrics.
- Develop, assess, improve and maintain clinical quality, service, and safety. Utilize performance metrics to measure results.
- Develop & implement site, regional and CSL strategies, policies & procedures.
- Work with hospital leadership to recommend privileging criteria
- Model clinical excellence
- Assure high quality patient care and effective resource utilization by promoting effective processes for outcomes measurement, process improvement and care management

Personnel management and development
- Personnel management related to physician performance & citizenship, including all inpatient providers and outpatient providers.
- Develop staff clinical skills.
- Lead annual performance reviews and provide ongoing performance feedback regarding triple aim objectives including but not limited to coding, productivity, quality, and patient experience
- Facilitate the site peer review process in partnership with the Medical Staff Chief
- Organize and monitor call schedules and ensure that these function appropriately
- Review requests for vacations, conferences, professional activities, and CME to ensure adequate clinical coverage and that resources are being used appropriately
- Assure appropriate planning and supervision for all non-attending psychiatric providers (residents, fellows, moonlighters, etc…)
- Lead provider meetings and attend staff meetings as requested
- Program Development
- Recommend the sufficient number and skill mix of qualified and competent persons to provide care or service.
- Recommend space and other resources needed by the department or service.
- Have a major role in the recruitment process for department staff, including the interview, onboarding, and continuing education.
- Interdepartmental/intradepartmental coordination of services. Ensure integration with hospital, ambulatory and CSL structures. Represent the hospital and medical staff on system-wide committees.
- Participate in relationship building in the community and with non-psychiatric physicians.
- Participate in periodic meetings with site clinicians/operations (hospital and clinic), with site executives and with system committees and other medical directors
- Act as the hospital conduit for the patient experience to inform best care.
- This position reports to the VP, Mental Health Clinical Service Line with an indirect reporting relationship to the DOMA, Hospital.
Education
- This position requires a Medical Doctorate degree (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) or foreign equivalent from an approved school of medicine.

Licensure/Certification

Work Schedule
Primarily daytime hours, may provide some weeknights and weekend call.
