About Us: Since 1989, HFH Summer Camps has been offering free summer camp opportunities to children who live in NYC, who are experiencing homelessness. We are a non-profit organization that operates a traditional sleep away camps located in Harriman state park.
HFH Summer Camps, American Camp Association Accredited camps, are seeking a Waterfront Director for campers ages 7-10.
Responsibilities Include:
- Take an active role in risk management and camper safety.
- Mentor, support, and supervise waterfront staff in activities, teaching, and planning.
- Conduct periodic formal and informal staff performance evaluations.
- Meet daily with camp leadership to solve problems and improve camp.
- Assist with daily cabin activities, rest periods, meals, community service, overnights, etc.
- Implement a strict water safety program with ACA, NYS, and health department standards.
- Facilitate an effective “Buddy” system.
- Manage swim staff at the waterfront and at other parts of the camp program.
- Implement Red Cross instructional swim program and assessments.
- Coordinate pool/lake activities and lessons including boating and swimming.
- Clearly differentiate, document, and develop skill levels and expectations according to the age group of the children.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 21 years of age with 3 years of Lifeguarding experience
- Desire to work and live in the outdoors for two months during the summer from June 14 – August 17, 2020.
- An understanding of and liking of children; knowledge of behavioral issues a plus.
- Ability to pass a background check, physical exam and be up to date on all required immunizations.
- CPR/First Aid Certification a plus
- WSI (Water Safety Instructor) certificate or recognized equivalent a plus
You will also need to provide:
- Three letters of reference
- A physical exam by a licensed Medical Doctor and be up to date with all required immunizations
- Additional special skills and certifications (First Aid, CPR, EMT, and other) are a plus.
Summer 2020
- June 22th General staff expected to arrive to camp
- Tuesday, June 23rd General Staff Training begins at 12 Noon
- Session 1: Wednesday, July 1, 2020 – Tuesday July 7, 2020
- Friday, July 10th staff back from break by 12:00 PM
- Session 2: Tuesday, July 14, 2020 – Monday July 27, 2020
- Wednesday, July 29th staff back from break by 12:00 PM
- Session 3: Thursday, July 30, 2020 – Thursday August 13, 2020
- All staff departs by August 17th by 3:00 PM
Please note due to the recent measles outbreak in NY State, all staff must have documented their MMR immunization with month, day and year. Two shots must be documented.
