The system has more than 1,800 full-time and part-time employees in Smithfield and Clayton. The medical staff has nearly 300 physicians with a wide range of specialties to meet the needs of patients. 150 dedicated volunteers help give patients and visitors the friendly, attentive service they deserve.The system also enjoys an experienced leadership team who work effectively with a governing board to oversee the operation of Johnston Health. The FY2020 budget has Johnston Health with Net Operating Revenues of almost $237M with Total Operating Expense of $233M, for an Operating Margin of almost 1.6%.
The Smithfield hospital is licensed for 179 medical/surgical beds and 20 behavioral health beds. It includes a 24/7 emergency department and various outpatient services. It opened in 1951 as Johnston Memorial Hospital. In February of 2010, the hospital opened a five-story wing with 101 patient suites, a food court, modern operating rooms and 16-bed intensive care unit. The facility offers radiation therapy, medical oncology, interventional cardiology including STEMI, and a Joint Center.While the original 1950s building is no longer used for patient stays, it does house patient services such as sleep studies and joint replacement surgery rehab. It’s also used as office space for administrators and departments such as marketing, human resources and medical staff services.
In 2009, Johnston Health Clayton was opened to provide easy access to care for the growing population in and around Clayton. With this growth came the expansion of the Clayton campus to a three-story wing, which opened in January 2015. It is a 50-bed medical/surgical facility offering OB services, radiation therapy and medical oncology.
The three-story Johnston Professional Plaza is home to Johnston Health’s medical and radiation oncology services as well as a primary care practice.The system also includes primary care offices in Clayton, Smithfield and Kenly, and the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.
Johnston Health received an “A” in the Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2019 Hospital Safety Grade.The system also received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2018 & 2019 from Healthgrades – recognizing the system as among the top 15% of hospitals nationwide for patient experience.And last year, Johnston Health was named a Top 25 health provider in the state by the Business North Carolina magazine.
- Strategic:Works closely with the Board and staff to create, implement, monitor and maintain key strategic initiatives supporting the hospital’s continued growth, effectiveness and performance in a transparent and collaborative manner.
- Administrative: Assumes ultimate responsibility for the total operations of Johnston Health – providing leadership, direction and administration of all hospital operations in keeping with established objectives and ensuring quality patient care and leading-edge services.
- Visible Champion: Serves as the hospital’s primary external representative and promoter of public relations inside and outside of the hospital, and between the hospital and the region, by sharing information necessary for increasing awareness of services provided and emphasizing the unique nature of Johnston Health.
- Medical Staff/Community Relations: Assists the medical staff in providing for their needs to deliver quality care – coordinating efforts to recruit and retain excellent clinical personnel, working with the medical staff committees, and keeping lines of communication open at all times to include community-based independent private practice as well as employed physicians.Acts as a liaison to maintain open lines of communication for the promotion of effective working relationships between all hospital entities, medical staff, Board of Directors, health system patients and families.
- UNC Health Care System Relations: As part of the Triangle Region, the next President & CEO will work closely with Region President to ensure a cohesive strategy is set forth and pursued.He/She supports the development of operational, financial and capital budgets within the framework of the System. As a leader within the affiliate network of hospitals, the successful candidate will support the development of the Johnston Health organization business planning process that underpins its role and relationship to the Triangle Region and UNC Health Care System as a whole.

- Financial: Monitors the fiscal activities of the hospital – assisting in the preparation of the budget and allocation of funds, monitoring the financial status of the organization on a regular basis, and making appropriate adjustments to secure market growth and enhance fiscal strengths.Leads the development of a financial strategy that supports and complements the overarching strategic vision for Johnston Health.
- Regulatory:Participates in, develops understanding of, and follows local, state and federal regulatory requirements. Serves as an effective advocate and voice for Johnston Health and the rural health community at the regional and state level.
Qualifications

Master’s degree in Business, Health Administration, or similar advanced degree;

10 or more years experience as a senior executive within a similar or larger-sized hospital or mid-to-large regional health system;

Experience as CEO, COO or equivalent leadership role strongly preferred;

Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) is a plus.
