The Vice President of Underwriting will develop and monitor guidelines that ensure that Petplan complies with the rules and regulations of the US states and Canadian provinces in which we do business. This individual will be responsible for strategy as well as implementation, and a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves approach is essential. He or she will work collaboratively with business partners to find solutions that allow the company to achieve its strategic objectives in a compliant manner while demonstrating the highest levels of service and professionalism in all they do.
Reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, the Vice President of Underwriting will:
- Serve as primary point of contact and liaison to Petplan’s underwriters.
- Review, evaluate and report on loss activity; make recommendations to improve the performance of the assigned book of business in the U.S. and Canada.
- In conjunction with the CUO, define underwriting strategy and recommend business plans that will generate continued profitable business growth in current and future markets.
- Meet and negotiate with distribution partners and insurers to build relationships and to develop new business.
- Initiate and take full responsibility for all policy form and rate filings.
- Partner with IT to ensure to the timely implementation of forms and rates into a new underwriting platform. Oversee QA testing to ensure forms and rates are correctly implemented.
- Review and enhance products, and develop new products to support continued growth and profitability.
- Provide input into product, underwriting, and distribution strategy.
- Review and approve all marketing materials to ensure compliance with insurance regulations and individual state and provincial filings.
- Maintain and monitor company compliance with existing laws, regulations and trends in the industry.
- Review all policyholder surveys, assign responsibility and initiate any actions.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required- Master’s Degree preferred
- 15+ years of experience in the Insurance industry, with a focus on Property & Casualty or Accident & Health leadership; strong focus on and knowledge of insurance compliance required. Must hold current Property and Casualty Insurance Licenses and pursue additional licensing as needed.
- Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize a high volume of tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to context, substance and detail while meeting goals and strict deadlines.
- Solid understanding of underwriting as well as the components required to drive program profitability (top line and bottom line); ability to develop and maintain underwriting guidelines
- Must have a solid grasp of Coverage and Policy wording, with the ability to create/alter wording to achieve a desired outcome (i.e., state objections, product expansion, corrective actions)
- Understanding of basic actuarial concepts and the ability to communicate effectively with actuarial teams for both the Company and the underwriter
- Experience developing and managing relationships with carriers
- Book management capabilities (the ability to develop tools and book monitoring reports, suggest action plans to achieve a desired outcome)
- Product Development Experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively build and extend relationships
- Excellent computer skills using MS Office
- Excellent Property & Casualty insurance knowledge including audit, compliance, and rate filings
