Social, environmental, and behavioral influences accruing over the life-course are by far the strongest predictors of health and disease. Founded in 2015, the Stanford Center for Population Health Sciences (PHS) is a research center dedicated to improving individual and population health by bringing together diverse disciplines and data to better understand and address the complex and intertwined social determinants of health.
One important goal of the Center is to spur and support transdisciplinary PHS-related research that advances our understanding of the social determinants of health. Toward this end, we have established a large portfolio of research partnerships. initiatives, and working groups that vary in terms of their scope, complexity, and topics. The Project Director (PD) will be responsible for independently managing a sub-set of projects in this portfolio. Initially, the PD would have primary responsibility for:
- India-focused projects. PHS recently launched a Center in India and will be initiating several exciting projects focused on transforming primary health care through digital innovation, advancing rural health, developing sanitation innovations, creating a national health data ecosystem (in partnership with the Indian government), and reducing wasting and stunting.
- American Manufacturing Consortium (AMC). PHS has rich longitudinal data (e.g., claims, human resources). on a large manufacturing cohort. A transdisciplinary consortium of researchers from different universities is utilizing this data to better understand how life affects health over the life course.
With minimal supervision, the PD, for each project in their portfolio, will:
Lead project planning and operations
- Develop an overall project plan in Smartsheet that includes goals, milestones, timeline, and metrics
- Create and manage programming that advances each project’s goals and objectives. For example, the PD would be expected to arrange a broad range of events and meetings related to the AI for Healthcare project that increases faculty interest and engagement from across the University.
- Ensuring financial and administrative compliance with entities such as Stanford Global LLC, India and other collaborators. Identify regulatory resources and research various policies to ensure compliance. For example, the PD will be responsible for setting up a contract with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) that abides by Stanford and India’s administrative and financial policies and regulations. The expectation is that the PD would drive this forward independently.
- Arranging faculty and/or partner visits
- Understanding and complying with Stanford’s administration, financial, and research policies and regulations (for example, identifying the correct visas to issue to visitors of PHS’ India Center, coordinate IRBs for the AMC consortium etc.)
- Writing reports, drafting agreements, etc.
- Managing and maintaining the CRM system (i.e., contact database)
- Fulfilling faculty and/or partner requests
- Coordinating efforts between Stanford and India and relevant collaborative organizations
- Solve administrative and/or logistical challenges (e.g., opening bank accounts and setting up payroll in India, working closely with Stanford’s legal department re: use of AMC data)
- Manage research and/or data issues (e.g., working with PHS’ data core to provide Stanford scholars with secure access to datasets located in diverse countries with different regulatory requirements)
- Provide ad-hoc support to move a project forward (e.g., conducting literature reviews, preparing slides for partner meetings, writing job gifs, etc.)
- The PD will independently: 1) Track project metrics 2) analyze results and present overall summary/recommendations to PHS’ senior team.
- The PD will represent the projects at key events and meetings (i.e., able to act as the face of the project as needed). For example, the PD would be expected to represent PHS at high-level project meetings with the NIH, Gates Foundation, Tata Trusts, and Google.
- Identifying and prioritizing funding opportunities
- Driving/coordinating responses to funding solicitations
- Connecting faculty members with partners on-the-ground
- Facilitating administrative and/or logistical support
- Connecting faculty members with our data core team
- Creating and implementing systems for ensuring smooth internal communications among core project team members (e.g., arranging /driving weekly team meetings, composing/sending regular updates to all team members, organizing retreats)
- Developing and executing external communications plan, broadly disseminating key research findings
- The PD will manage project-related budgets. This will be a very complex task since some of their projects are based in India and rely on diverse funding sources. For example, the Internet Saathi Project is receiving funding from the Dean’s Office and Tata Trusts. The funding from Tata needs to remain in India. Since Stanford LLP is registered as a for-profit Tata Trusts can not provide us with a gift. The PD will need to work closely with Global Business Services to deal with all of these complexities in a timely manner.
- The PD, drawing on their content knowledge, will be responsible for assembling and supporting project teams. For example, for the Internet Saathi project the PD will need to assemble a team with expertise/experience in areas such as financial inclusion, gender equity, and randomized control experiments.
Support administrative and logistical operations
Identify and resolve project-related issues
The PD, with broad autonomy, will be responsible for ensuring project goals are met on-schedule, anticipating and resolving potential issues:
Oversee project-related metrics
Represent projects at key events and meetings
Assist with development efforts
The PD will help to secure project funding by:
Nurture/manage faculty partnerships
The PD will be responsible for engaging faculty from across the university in the projects that are part of their portfolio. Examples:
Manage project-related communications
The PD will independently oversee internal and external communications:
Oversee project-related budgets
May direct and/or supervise staff
- – Other duties may also be assigned
