Deerfield Discovery and Development, LLC (3DC) will engage in drug discovery research in collaboration with faculty from top universities across the United States. 3DC is the drug discovery arm of Deerfield Management Company, L.P. (“Deerfield”), an investment firm dedicated to advancing healthcare. The goal of 3DC is to enable portfolio companies of Deerfield’s investment funds create a pipeline of medically important and commercially viable projects at a scale sufficient to produce value for patients and investors. Project teams will consist of scientists from a wide variety of disciplines (chemistry, biology, computational science, software and automation engineering), working together in a highly collaborative environment to advance these goals.
We seek an entrepreneurial Medicinal Chemistry leader to develop and lead the Chemistry capability within 3DC. The ideal candidate has strong technical and problem-solving skills in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, including PK/PD studies; has significant experience managing chemistry outsourcing; and has exceptional written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills and critical thinking skills. The candidate will have experience in leading a chemistry function involved in programs from hit identification to clinical candidate nomination; experience leading cross-functional discovery teams in this space is highly desirable. The successful candidate will report to the CEO of 3DC and be part of a cross-functional leadership team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide scientific expertise on campaigns from exploratory programs to IND-ready stage through management of an operating model that integrates functional expertise from academic collaborators, internal 3DC resources and external vendors (CRO).
  • Guide and support drug discovery chemistry and computational chemistry team and functional consultants
  • Select and oversee CROs for academic collaboration projects
  • Develop and manage relationships with academic partners
  • Drives data-driven decisions to derisk drug discovery programs in order to enable clinical development of selected drug candidates for novel targets
  • Communicates science and strategy effectively in a variety of internal and external settings
  • Collaborates closely with other members of Deerfield’s executive science team to develop and implement overall strategy for new project candidates

Qualifications:


Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field with 15+ years of industry experience
  • Strong track record of initiating and leading drug discovery programs
  • Creative and scientifically-oriented leader who stays close to the science
  • Extensive managerial and organizational experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrable leadership and vision; ability to work effectively with other leadership team members, and external partners
  • Desire and capacity to participate in a dynamic and fast-paced research setting
  • Recognized scientific innovation and accomplishment evidenced by strong record of publication and conference presentations
