The Director of Back Office oversees the settlement, reconciliation and reporting functions for Avangrid Renewablesâ transactions for wind, solar, thermal and bilateral trading in power and natural gas. The Director maintains knowledge and expertise in energy market settlement methodologies, contracts, and provides technical and business expertise across various departments. The Director is accountable for maintaining applicable controls to ensure accuracy in recording and reporting energy transactions.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as subject matter expert for settlements in power and natural gas markets, including business practices, systems, and controls; provide guidance and analytical support to the Settlements team
- Collaborate cross-functionally in the negotiation and review of contracts and agreements; accountable for the settlement of contractual agreements and ensuring compliance with terms, conditions and policies; highlight any settlement risks related to implementing new activities or contracts
- Ensure that operational activity is conducted within a strong control framework, identifying gaps and developing mitigations as appropriate
- Oversee Back Office team in the analysis of settlement data to provide feedback to Origination and Scheduling on potential exposure in various markets, particularly ISO markets
- Support the integration of new business activity into area of responsibility, ensuring people and processes are aligned and activity is handled in a controlled and efficient manner
- Provide guidance for setting performance goals and project deadlines within the settlements stream, mentoring and developing staff expertise to ensure proper settlement preparation and documentation
- Allocate resources and direct staff to ensure day-to-day tasks are completed while ensuring that longer-term projects and initiatives are implemented effectively
- Design and work with IT teams to implement improvements to systems, procedures and policies for energy settlement activities
- Provide project management and leadership of internal team initiatives and serve as key representative for cross-functional projects that require Back Office expertise and participation
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting or related field with a strong background in financial analysis or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- 10 yearsâ experience in the energy industry or other applicable work experience relevant to responsibilities of this position
- Demonstrated experience in a supervisory or managerial role
- Must be a self-starting and motivated individual who is able to effectively manage priorities while meeting deadlines for deliverables
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to communicate effectively at all levels
- Thorough knowledge and previous experience with one or more energy information systems
- Advanced Excel skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Thorough knowledge of energy systems and performing analysis for renewable energy market in organized power pools such as ERCOT, MISO, CAISO, and PJM
- Ability to navigate and succeed in a highly matrixed reporting structure, preferably at a multinational company
- Takes action beyond that required by explicit job responsibilities; sets high performance goals and originates action rather than responding to the action of others
- Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills with strong focus on teamwork and collaboration across a broad range of work groups
- Strong prioritization and multi-tasking skills with the ability to operate in a complex, rapidly changing business environment with tight schedules and demanding targets
- Ability to analyze project risks and proactively identify solutions with a flexible, creative, and solution-focused outlook on problem solving
- The ideal candidate should have experience coaching employees, monitoring progress, enforcing rules and ensuring quality compliance
