Overview:[

The Department of Theatre Arts at Utah State University offers a 9-month tenure track Assistant Professor position to head its Theatre Studies program and contribute to its Theatre Education program. The Department of Theatre Arts is comprised of 13 full-time faculty, approximately 100 undergraduate students, and 6 graduate students. The department offers BFA degrees in Acting, Applied Theatre, Design/Technology, and Theatre Education; a BA degree in Theatre Studies; and an MFA degree in Theatrical Design. The department administers the Lyric Repertory Company, a professional summer theater operating on a Equity LOA-LORT contract.

]Responsibilities:

  • Engage in academic scholarship, including conducting and publishing high-quality research in the candidate’s area of expertise and obtaining extramural funding to support these endeavors when appropriate.
  • Teach an array of courses in theatre, performance studies, and theatre education which may include but are not limited to: theatre history and literature; dramatic theory and criticism; script analysis, methods of teaching drama and theatre, other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, and introductory courses for non-theatre majors.
  • Head the B.A. program in theatre studies, including participating in recruiting efforts to grow the program, mentoring all students enrolled in the program, and associated administrative duties.
  • Contribute to the cultivation of undergraduate and graduate research in the department, including mentoring student research, creative, and pedagogical projects.
  • If appropriately qualified, possibly direct productions in the department’s mainstage season.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service. Provide national, state, and local service to the field and its professional associations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A doctoral degree in theatre studies, performance studies, theatre education, or a closely related discipline. ABD applicants may be considered if they will have their degree in hand by August 1, 2020.
  • A record of peer-reviewed scholarly contributions and demonstrated potential to develop and execute a significant research agenda including regular publication of peer-reviewed academic books and articles.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach introductory and upper-level courses in theatre studies (such as theatre history and historiography; dramatic literature; script analysis; performance studies; theory and criticism; dramaturgy; and other scholarly aspects of theatre) as well as theatre education, including at least two years of teaching experience at the college/university level (experience as a graduate instructor is acceptable).
  • Qualifications to teach courses in the department’s theatre education program.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and collegial relationships with faculty, students, and staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated success effectively teaching courses in which students from all theatrical disciplines enroll as well as courses for non-majors.
  • Demonstrated success obtaining extramural funding to support research and teaching endeavors.
  • Demonstrated excellence in directing.
