The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Design and Engineering Services is looking for a Engineer/Architect II? to help us Keep Alaska Moving!
Key Duties and Responsibilities
This position requires advanced knowledge of transportation engineering, capital improvement project management, advanced skills in written and oral communication, experience supervising the work of engineering professionals, knowledge of State and Federal processes, and the ability to analyze and appraise facts in making management decisions.
Under the direction of the Traffic, Safety & Utilities Chief, the incumbent in this position performs a variety of project management duties, such as:
- Management of consultants and in-house staff in the preparation of project permits, plans, specifications, and estimates for roadway capital improvement projects while ensuring conformance with Federal, State and local requirements;
- Preparation of project scope, schedule, and budget;
- Preparation and management of consultant contracts as well as the review and evaluation of civil design work;
- Coordination with local governments, in-house design staff, and functional support groups, such as Utilities, Environmental, Right of Way, Materials, Bridge Design, Surveys, Maintenance, and Contracts;
- Tracking and reporting project development; and
- Preparation of project status updates for presentation to the public, local governments, and DOT&PF leadership.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications:
The preferred candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and qualifications:
- Experience preparing plans, specifications, and estimates for capital improvement projects;
- Familiarity with commonly recognized design standards for highways, roads and pathways;
- Experience with NEPA;
- Experience leading, coordinating, and supervising a multi-discipline team;
- Experience preparing, negotiating, and managing professional service agreement;
- Able to work independently as well as in groups and exercise sound judgment in handling problems associated with engineering projects;
- Able to maintain a good rapport with supervisors, associates, contractors and the general public;
- Strong oral and written communication skills; and
- Experience with the public involvement and agency coordination process.
Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
