FUNCTION

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Communications will set and guide the strategy for all communications, media, and public relations messaging and collateral to consistently articulate the organization’s mission, including press relations, marketing, and event planning & promotion. This position will work closely with the Director of Development and the organization’s leadership team on the planning and implementation of critical mission-focused initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct all aspects of public relations, communication, events planning, and lifesaving promotions
  • Interview, hire, train, and evaluate public relations personnel
  • Work with leadership team to develop strategic public relations initiatives and evaluation (both short-term and long-term) based upon the organization’s needs
  • Develop an annual spending plan for programs related to the organization’s public relations activity.
  • Maintain the organization’s social media presence to established standards
  • Coordinate with associated programs leadership in support of marketing, lifesaving, and fundraising promotion and events
  • Manage development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, annual report, and organization’s website
  • Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of public relations activities
  • Manage and document all media contacts
  • Update annual calendar of programs and prepare monthly reports
  • Attend board meetings as appropriate
  • Any other duties that the Executive Director may assign

  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently

  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position public relations and communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
  • Self-starter, able to work independently; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives

WORK HOURS

This position has varying working hours depending on the organization’s needs.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 3-5+ years of increasing responsibility in nonprofit communications management

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director.
