POSITION SUMMARY:
The Activity Director is responsible for helping Resident’s achieve and maintain their highest cognitive functioning possible through stimulation, spirituality, relaxation, creative expression, and exercise. The Activity Director is responsible for planning, coordinating and directing of a wide and varied scope of activities and programming which meet the spiritual, physical, social and recreational needs of the resident population at his/her assigned Skilled Nursing Facility.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Plans, coordinates and directs a wide scope of social and recreational activities to enhance the skilled nursing experience and improve the resident quality of life.
  • Determines resident programming preferences, tracks resident activity participation and adjust calendar events accordingly. Evaluates programs to make sure the quality and content of programs fits the needs of all residents
  • Coordinates with Food and Beverage department, and other applicable departments, for activities and events.
  • Procures and coordinates groups, organizations, and individuals to perform for or instruct the residents as part of the Activities program.
  • Evaluates and assists in developing individual resident care plans with Director of Nursing and other disciplines. Works harmoniously with the Director of Nursing in determining the level and quantity of activity for each individual resident. Attends Care Plan Meetings for Skilled Care residents.
  • Assists in orienting new residents to the community, helping to ensure satisfactory integration into the community. Interacts with Social Services to ensure smooth transition.
  • Serves as a resource person for new residents. Assures that all necessary forms are prepared and informational pamphlets are distributed.
  • Arranges for transportation to events and programs when necessary, including bus transportation and other vehicle transportation.
  • Coordinates and facilitates community resident council program.
  • Collaborate with Director, Life Enrichment to establish and maintain an active network of resident and community volunteers and other community resources.
  • Prepare budget and monitor expenses and financial statements to meet or beat budget targets.
  • Posts and/or distributes information and material regarding events, programs, activities, etc.
  • Writes and/or gathers materials for the community newsletter.
  • Orders necessary supplies, films, crafts, etc.
  • Ensures that strict confidentiality is upheld in regards to resident information.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state and local regulations.
  • Initiates and monitors continuous quality improvement programs.
  • Stays abreast active aging and generational trends in order to enhance the program.
  • Respond to resident and family concerns professionally and promptly.
  • Shares in the responsibility for providing and maintaining an environment that is conducive to the safety, physical and emotional well-being of residents and staff.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of personal role in the event of a fire or internal/external disaster, regularly reviewing fire and disaster procedures.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.


MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs those administrative activities necessary for the effective management of the department, including provision for the selection and development of employees, salary and budget administration, employee counseling and motivation, disciplinary action, organization of goals and objectives, and planning, organizing, integrating and measuring the work performed within the department.
  • Delegate responsibilities to staff with clear expectations

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Degree in recreational therapy and/or activity director certification preferred or high school education with experience in geriatrics, recreation or social administration.
  • Two years of experience, planning/implementing resident activities and events.
  • Demonstrates an appreciation of the heritage, values, and wisdom of the residents and an understanding of the aging process.
  • Must have a high level of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Very strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with staff, leaders, vendors and other stakeholders.
  • Expert level written and verbal communication skills. Excellent communication and grammar skills are required.
  • Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability.
  • Demonstrate the highest level of customer/client service and response.
  • Ability to achieve high performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment with an attention to detail.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment that promotes inclusiveness and communication among team members.
