Account Manager

I. Position Objective

The contribution that an Account Manager makes to NORTHWESTERN BENEFIT is to:

  • Assist Benefit Consultant (BC) in delivering upon client business plans that are designed to provide clients with unbelievable service and consulting in order to retain their business.
  • Ensure work continues to move forward on behalf of the BC so that the BC is able to be out on the road in front of the client as much as possible.

II. Means to Accomplish the Objective(s)

  • Partners with Benefit Consultants (BC), Client Services Specialists (CSS), and Renewal Specialists (RS) to address the stated needs of each client in their books of business. This partnership is demonstrated through:
    • Attending Team Meetings and staying in touch with the client needs as shared;
    • Understanding key business issues facing the client;
    • Receiving information and updates from the BCs regarding the client’s benefit plans and incorporating that information into viable solutions for the client;
    • Preparing analyses of these solutions in formats that effectively communicate them to the clients (spreadsheets, summaries, carrier documents, etc.);
    • Assisting in the delivery of client specific business plans. Typical deliverables include but are not limited to spearheading the open enrollment process, conducting open enrollment meetings, educating clients employee benefit communication tools, conducting post renewal meetings, deploying Survey Monkey, and delivery of client activity reports.
    • First pass review of carrier quotes and initial negotiation, as a part of the Request for Proposal process.
    • Guiding and forwarding the work of the CSSs or RSs while the BC is out of the office.
  • Understands thoroughly (and stays knowledgeable of) employee benefits, including plan designs, available riders, legislation, and emerging trends. Shares this knowledge with others at NORTHWESTERN BENEFIT.
  • Anticipates concerns developing from the renewal process; proactively checks and verifies all information (new rates, employee enrollments and changes, ID cards, etc.).
  • Uses tools and systems (e.g. Brokerage Builder, MS Word, Excel, etc.) to enhance the job. Updates systems, creates e-mail groups for fast and efficient information dissemination. Keeps desk and work area organized and clean.
  • Communicates thoroughly, proactively and clearly with all team members concerning client issues.
  • Positively influences the team members; uses the Collaborative Way effectively to mediate concerns, offer encouragement and praise, and build good working relationships.
  • Promotes and offers ideas for improvement.
  • Attends training opportunities, reads and shares industry knowledge, regularly participates in coursework to either earn or maintain professional designations.
  • Assesses the nature of a problem quickly, understand thoroughly the expectations of the client, and consistently meets those expectations through viable solutions.

Reports to: Director of Account Service

Supervises: None

IV. Knowledge/Experience Required to Achieve the Objective(s)

  • Two or more years of experience in group benefits.
  • An earned Bachelors degree (or its equivalent).
  • An earned Individual Producers License in Health and Life Insurances.
  • An interest in pursuing Professional Designations (RHU, REBC, CEBS) preferred.

V. Skills/Abilities Required to Achieve the Objective(s)

  • Excellent communication skills (listens, speaks, and writes well); able to interact effectively with people of various responsibility and authority (employees, key contacts, executives, etc.). Comfortable making group presentations.
  • Highly organized.
  • Able to manage a multitude of details (including paperwork); stays proactive while juggling these issues.
  • Very comfortable with typical business technology including voice mail, e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
  • Handles many simultaneous projects efficiently and effectively.
  • Operates in a fast-paced, energetic environment and welcomes change.
  • Models and exemplifies the NORTHWESTERN BENEFIT Fundamentals. In all things, seeks to behave in a personal, consistent, and reliable manner.

VI. Physical Requirements/Miscellaneous to Achieve the Objective(s)

  • This position involves light lifting and transporting of boxes that may weigh up to 25 pounds each and be awkward to carry.
  • This position will require getting to and from client locations. For that, it is typically expected that one will maintain a valid driver’s license and own a reliable vehicle.
