Grays Harbor College invites applications to apply for the position of Vice President for Instruction. This is a full time, 12-month administrative position. The effective date of employment will be July 1, 2020. Founded in 1930, Grays Harbor College (GHC) is located on a picturesque 120-acre site overlooking the town of Aberdeen and its seaport on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Grays Harbor College offers a beautiful setting and challenging programs for learners of all ages and interests. GHC also has education centers in rural Pacific County and delivers education at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center. GHC has an average of 4,028 students with an average of 2,048 FTE. There are 65 full-time and 57 part-time faculty working at GHC.

The Vice President of Instruction (VPI) is the Chief Academic Officer of the college and is responsible for providing overall vision, leadership, management, and planning for the instructional functions of the college. The VPI reports to the college president and is a member of the Executive Management Team.
Areas of responsibility include academic transfer, professional technical and baccalaureate, and pre-college programs; continuing and community education offerings; a variety of student support functions, including the library, eLearning, and tutoring, as well as oversight of instructional budgets; general oversight of academic scheduling; faculty selection, evaluation, and tenure processes; development and implementation of academic planning tools. The VPI works collaboratively with other divisions of the college in order to carry out the mission of the college and to assure that students can successfully define and carry out their educational goals.
Examples of duties include the following:
- Leads, administers, maintains and assesses quality instruction by:
- Directing development of programs, curriculum and training programs to meet the needs of students and the community.
- Developing, implementing and assessing instructional strategies as a part of the college’s strategic plan and the strategic enrollment management plan.
- Supervising Instructional Administrators and recommending to the president the appointment of instructional personnel.
- Supervising and evaluating all transfer faculty and programs.
- Overseeing and ensuring student learning by implementing and maintaining a program of student learning outcomes assessment.
- Developing and maintaining effective professional development opportunities for faculty and other instructional personnel.
- Making and/or overseeing faculty assignments in accordance with college policies and contractual agreements.
- Directing the development of quarterly and annual schedules of classes and the educational program sections of the college catalog, ensuring deadlines are met.
- Directing the evaluation of all faculty and all instructional staff and administrators in accordance with college policies and contractual agreements.
- Serving as chairperson of Instructional Council and Division Chairs.
- Administering the instructional budget.
- Coordinating with the Institutional Effectiveness, Research and Planning Office on studies and research assessing the effectiveness of instructional programs.
- Serves and collaborates as a member of the College’s Executive Team
- Fosters a positive campus climate
- Assists with college community relations.
- Engages with the local community, participates in workforce development efforts, connects with K-12 leaders to form effective partnerships (including the development and delivery of concurrent enrollment programs) and represents the college’s mission across the service district.
- Facilitates partnerships with universities for research and economic development projects.
- Represents the college in the community and on state-level commissions and committees as appropriate (Includes representing Grays Harbor College on statewide Instruction Commission).
- Chairs instructionally related sub committees and ad-hoc committees.
- Assists grant writer in pursuit of appropriate grants that augment instruction.
- Facilitates the Exceptional Faculty Awards Program.
- Provides guidance to tenure committee chairs.
- Carries out any other duties assigned by the President.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervises instructional faculty in Transfer Education and instructional administrators charged with directing Library, e Learning, and Media Services; Transitions Education; Corrections Education; Career/Technical Education; Bachelor of Applied Science degrees; and Business and Community Education. May supervise other instructional employees.

Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- Four years administrative experience in a community college environment in a progressively responsible supervisory position.
- Demonstrated abilities in collaborative problem solving and management
- Four years of successful teaching at the college level.
- Excellent listening, speaking, writing, critical thinking, and problem solving abilities
- Demonstrated experience with outcomes assessment and program effectiveness
- Understanding of and experience with strategic planning, enrollment management and budget development
- Demonstrated understanding of and belief in the mission and goals of the community college
- Experience that demonstrates the ability to promote diversity and enhance equity
- Experience in budget management and planning
- Experience in promoting student success and completion; experience in identifying barriers to student success and working to eliminate them
- Demonstrated understanding of and experience with implementing elements of Guided Pathways
