POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE
Must be able to understand and work with the mission of Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan (GSHOM), which is: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
The Assistant Director will ensure the safety of the girls that attend summer camps in GSHOM, keep daily and weekly functions of each activity area running according to the standards of GSHOM, Safety Activity Checkpoints, and American Camp Association. Will oversee job performance of nature/science counselor, arts and drama counselor, adventure counselor, aquatics coordinator and counselor, and equestrian coordinator and counselor.

  • Coordinate all-camp activities, campfires, themed meals to ensure that they are in accordance with the weekly theme.
  • Act as Camp Director when Camp Director is not present on camp.
  • Ability to step in as Health Officer when needed.
  • Assist in the hiring, training, and evaluation of camp program coordinators and counselors.
  • Write and oversee the implementation of lesson plans that meet camp goals, ensuring that GSHOM program activity manuals are in place and are being used at each activity area.
  • Regularly evaluate program staff’s performance as a supervisor and instructor, ensuring that all areas are programming in accordance to GSHOM’s procedures.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training.
  • Oversee the training of staff in their responsibilities while at each of camp’s program areas.
  • Assist in the supervision of counselor staff at adventure areas to provide a safe and high-quality program.
  • Implement the scheduling of adventure areas.
  • Oversee physical facilities and equipment in all program areas, ensuring that maintenance logs are kept and issues are reported and corrected immediately.
  • Ensure that program staff complete initial and end-of-season inventory and store equipment for safety.
  • Ensure that staff complete daily checks of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Work with fellow members of the camp leadership team to develop a program curriculum, awards programs, and leadership programs.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of any special events on or near the adventure areas.
  • Participate in management and staff meetings.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience with overnight camps
  • Experience in facilitating archery and management of an archery range and equipment
  • Experience in facilitating a climbing wall program and managing a climbing wall, equipment, and staff
  • Experience in managing an aquatics program and managing a waterfront and pool(Linden only)
  • Experience in managing an equestrian program preferred
  • Must have or be willing to become First Aid and CPR certified
  • Must be able to pass climbing wall certification course
  • Current archery certification or willingness to obtain
  • Age 21 or older preferred due to ACA guidelines
  • Must be willing to become a member of Girl Scouts
  • Must be able to pass State and National background check.
  • Knowledge of the Girl Scout program preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Operates in a professional camp environment and will live on site. This role occasionally uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones. Ability and willingness to work in various activity areas within camp (archery, climbing wall, waterfront, horses, etc) in all types of weather from rain, snow, extreme heat and cold. Must be able to move around the camp property to assist campers in their activities. Will spend majority of hours each day standing and interacting with children.

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • Position requires flexibility with schedule, typical schedule is Friday through Sunday. Additional days added as necessary.
  • Staff training will be held June 7th – June 3th.
  • Position requires living on site and working evenings when scheduled.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
At Camp O’ the Hills this position oversees the Kitchen Coordinator and the Troop Camp Specialists, who are trained in multiple activity areas.
COMPENSATION

  • Room and board
  • $80 per day (This position requires a 3 day work week, Fri-Sunday. Additional days as necessary.)

LOCATION EMPLOYMENT DATES
June 1- August 17- additional dates earlier to June 1 possible

  • Position requires attending the entirety of staff training on-site June 12-June 19.
