What You Will Do:

Under limited supervision oversees the UMMC sustainability program. Acts as an advanced practitioner, educator, consultant, collaborator, and change agent who develops and leads a comprehensive sustainability program at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Downtown & Midtown Campuses. Includes general environmental quality improvement, sustainable product procurement, waste elimination, toxicity reduction, and air and water quality improvement across all UMMC operations.

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Focuses on improving the environmental quality and reducing environmental impacts of clinical processes and operation.
  • Responsible for tracking and benchmarking all sustainability programs, coordination of sustainability programs between departments, and represents UMMC’s environmental initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serves as liaison between UMMC internal communities and local and regional sustainability groups and projects and the UMMC administration and professional staff. Appropriately involves UMMS Public Affairs, Marketing, Commitment to Excellence Steering Committee, and SVP for External Affairs to develop and execute strategy for communicating UMMC’s commitment and progress toward sustainability with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Works in close collaboration with the UMMC Division of Quality and Safety, Employee Health, Safety and Environmental Health, Infection Control, Dietary and Energy Management programs.
  • Evaluates the environmental impact of UMMC clinical, clinical support, and administrative operations for the purpose understanding and communicating current environmental conditions and developing and implementing process improvements that create, improve, and sustain a healthy healing environment.
  • Researches emerging best sustainability practices and evidence based design findings for the purpose of identifying those that might provide benefit to UMMC patients, staff and visitors. Plans and conducts pilot programs to test efficacy of various initiatives precedent to coordinating adoption of effective and relevant “best practices” into UMMC’s standards of practice.
  • Pursues and if successful manages grants and other external funding opportunities. Works with Community Benefit team to accurately report environmental activities under IRS Form 990, Schedule H.
  • Chairs the UMMC Green Team. Serves on the Clinical Practice, Value Analysis, Environment of Care, and the UMB Sustainability Committees.
  • Responsible for weekly operations of the University Farmers Market. Seeks ways to expand and improve food access in the west Baltimorecommunities.
  • Works with Midtown campus leadership and staff to integrate and standardize sustainability programs and practices at both campuses.
  • Builds relationships and identify key committees and groups in which to serve that best advances the mission and visions of the Sustainability Program at the Midtown Campus


What You Need to Be Successful:


Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field including nursing, public health, environmental studies, facility engineering, architecture, environmental and/or occupational safety required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three years experience in nursing, public health, environmental studies, facility engineering, architecture, environmental and/or occupational safety or equivalent relevant experience is required.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of local, regional, and national emerging sustainable business strategies, life cycle assessments, return on investment analysis and other key sustainability tools and techniques.
  • Understanding of workplace safety, lean management, U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards, the Green Guidelines for Health Care, and basic environmental compliance for healthcare.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, complete and evaluate assignments and/or projects. Ability to analyze and to conceptually develop ideas, programs and projects, and oversee implementation especially within nursing process and practices.
  • Demonstrated competency in leadership role.
  • Demonstrated highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
