Job Summary:
This position is responsible for managing the accounting operations for the Insurance Linked Securities (ILS) division within Markel’s accounting and finance group, and is responsible for the controls and processes around reporting ILS financial results. This position works closely with management to provide strategic support to Finance leadership team while striving to manage independently.
Job Description
- Manage assigned monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger closing and reporting processes
- Ensure internal controls are in place and functioning appropriately
- Manage the preparation of quarterly financial packets and closing call presentations to senior management
- Present in quarterly closing calls, as required, and include key components of significant drivers impacting relevant account balances during the period
- Assist in the review/preparation of certain disclosures of the quarterly and annual SEC reports
- Partner with ILS partners to drive resolution of technical accounting issues and implementation of new standards
- Assist with quarterly and annual goodwill and intangible assessments
- Coordinate with cross functional teams to ensure accuracy of reporting given complex inter-company relationships and transactions
- Manage and coordinate the budget and reforescast process with ILS partners and Corporate planning team
- Assist in the internal and external audit processes and manage the reporting of any audit differencesor control deficiencies to senior management
- Work closely with other functional areas (i.e., business support, financial reporting, IT, human resources, legal, disbursements, treasury) and business management to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals
- Champion process improvement and ensure teams are continually working to improve processes
- Represent the ILS entities in strategic accounting and business projects as they arise
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; accounting graduate degree preferred
Certification
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensing required
Work Experience
- 5+ years of accounting experience
- Experience managing and developing resources preferred
Skill Sets
- Strong computer skills including a high degree of proficiency within Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with Oracle Fusion, Smartview preferred
- Experience working in an audit type of role preferred
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- High degree of flexibility and responsiveness to change in a fast-paced environment
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills in order to present ideas and findings to management and senior leadership in a professional manner
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines
- Strong research, analytical, and problem solving skills
