Job Description Summary

Summary: Utilizes a mastery of marketing competencies to plan, direct, and control the activities of associates responsible for the development and/or execution of a wide variety of projects across broad strategies. Develops and/or applies highly advanced principles and best practices. Leads the development and execution of strategies and plans that ensure long term sustainable growth of the business. Plans effective development and/or execution of long-range and complex marketing projects. Projects or forecasts future marketing needs. Synthesizes data and intuition on all areas of the business and leverages this understanding to identify and innovate business building solutions. Provides thought leadership and direction relative to assigned area of responsibility and multiple projects.

We are seeking a Director of Middle Market Marketing to develop the go-to-market strategy for industry verticals, including building out new industry-specific focused marketing platforms. In a nutshell, this includes

  • Strategy development
  • Marketing Plan
  • Content Marketing
  • E-mail Marketing
  • Reporting and analytics
  • Budgeting, Invoices
  • Writing summaries and presentations (including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Building and growing a highly engaged team of professional marketers

Responsible for 2-3 direct reports

Reporting Relationships: Must report to at least the AVP/VP level. As a manager must be responsible for al least 2 professional level direct reports; larger teams are preferred. May also be responsible for matrix reporting relationships and virtual teams.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Connection: Leads and coaches others in the development and execution of strategies and plans that ensure long term sustainable growth of the business. Interprets and synthesizes data using intuition on all areas of the business and leverages this understanding to identify, innovate and execute business building solutions.

Insights and Analytics: For wide array of projects, leads and coaches others in the utilization of Customer Insights & Analytics experts and tools to understand and forecast market, competitor and customer needs and behavior, define appropriate target audiences, evaluate sufficiency, and effectively drive results with data based decisions. Helps build and lead a learning culture through coaching and mentoring.

Branding: Leads, directs and coaches others regarding the brand within area of responsibility and across the organization through collaborative efforts, including the development and delivery of the On Your Side Experience to all stakeholders driving customer value (solutions and experience). Ensures consistency of the “brand experience” for all customers (end-users and intermediaries), considering company values and legal/compliance requirements.

Marketing Communications: Leads, develops and coaches others in communication plans and their implementation, including creation of the brand experience via superior Marketing Communications. Directs the development, testing and evaluation (via market metrics) of all marketing within area of responsibility. Role models and coaches strong personal oral and written communication skills in both internal and external presentations and communications.

Marketing Capabilities: Leveraging his/her own mastery, contributes to the development of increased Marketing Capability both within the team and across the Marketing organization. Also helps other functions understand the role of Marketing in driving the business. Coaches and mentors skill and knowledge growth in others. Hires, directs, coaches, and engages a team to build greater capabilities and deliver against objectives.

Organization Management: Directs day-to-day Marketing departmental operations, including associate performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organizational planning, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions. Defines budget needs and manages budget to goal.

Other: Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Graduate level degree in marketing, business administration or related field highly desirable.

Designations/ Certifications/ Licenses: Technical insurance designations such as CPCU, CLU, ChFC, FLMI considered a plus. Additional licensing may be required to hold this position.

Associates must obtain the required Federal and/or state licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit. Additional licenses/registrations may be required when new products and services are implemented. If an associate fails or is unable to obtain required licenses/registrations within the time period designated by the business unit, the associate will be ineligible to continue in the position.

Experience: Typically 10 or more years of related professional experience in marketing, insurance or related field. Masters or doctoral degree may be substituted for a portion of the experience requirements as appropriate. Management or project leadership experience.

Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of marketing methodologies, insurance and/or financial services products, distribution systems, and customers. Knowledge of project leadership concepts and methodologies.

Skills/ Competencies: Command of verbal and written skills needed to develop and review research studies, communicate research findings, market recommendations based on findings, develop and negotiate contracts/service agreements with internal/external contacts, manage market planning projects, and manage relationships. Ability to manage and prioritize projects. Ability to function independently or in a team environment. Ability to operate a personal computer and advanced business software. Excellent ability to train, lead and coach associates in all aspects of market planning.

Marketing Functional Mastery: Demonstrates mastery of core marketing competencies, including strategy development, utilization of insights and analytics, building brand equity and developing effective marketing communications.

Command of and ability to role model and deliver: Customer Focus, Operating Capabilities , Personal Effectiveness , Strategic Capabilities Talent Management

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Ability to work extended and/or non standard hours based on project load. Travel as required.
