Art Director

LOCATION

JOB SUMMARY


The Art Director works collaboratively with the creative director and editors to determine the visual identity and integrity of the Arizona Highways brand. This incumbent helps to plan and execute the visual presentation of the magazine, along with preparing and designing layouts for the magazine and ancillary products (books, calendars, posters, marketing material and more) as assigned by the creative director. This individual will also assist in preparing files and planning imagery for all aspects of the magazine’s digital efforts, including the website, social media platforms, the digital edition and other electronic publications.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the design and production ancillary products (books, calendars, marketing materials)
  • Collaborate with the creative director on the design and productions of the magazine
  • Contribute and collaborate in digital content development and uploading
  • Participation in department meetings and with artists and contributors
  • Travel on Arizona Highways for business


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES


Knowledge of:

  • Design principles, including color separation, photo editing, digital output and current technology
  • Adobe Creative Suite software and Mac platforms, with a special emphasis on InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat
  • Design for a digital audience
  • Designing for consumer publications


Skills in:

  • Visual problem-solving
  • Foundations in color, space, type, photography and digital design
  • Software and current publishing technologies
  • Organizational skills


Ability:

  • Creative vision
  • Engaging in the feedback process, to explain choices, receive input and work collaboratively toward creative solutions
  • Working well under pressure and tight deadlines


PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS


The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in graphic design
  • 7+ years’ experience designing for a CONSUMER magazine. Additional experience in book or marketing design a plus
  • 3+ years’ experience designing for interactive platforms, including digital publications, websites and social media

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete and sign PART 1 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate’s motor vehicle record (MVR). The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.12 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
