EXCEPTIONAL BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Spectrum Health System has embarked on a national search to recruit an industry leader to further its comprehensive systemwide behavioral health strategy in the integration of primary care with behavioral health. This $6.9 billion integrated health system consists of 14 hospitals, 155 ambulatory sites (including integrated care campuses, urgent care centers and walk-in clinics), 220 physician practices and clinics in the communities it serves throughout Southwest and West Michigan and a nationally recognized health plan. The system is nationally recognized for quality care and coverage and its success as a collaborative partner in the communities it serves. The Vice President of Behavioral Health will deepen this commitment and further the integration of care as a strategic priority of Spectrum. As in communities across the country, behavioral health/substance use difficulties are pervasive and, in many areas, have reached epidemic levels. Spectrum recognizes that strengthening its relationships with community partners will assist it in achieving its mission to improve both the physical and mental/behavioral health of the communities it serves.

As Vice President of Behavioral Health, you will collaborate with an extraordinary group of leaders across the Spectrum system (https://www.spectrumhealth.org/about-us/leadership-team) to reduce the stigma associated with behavioral health conditions, address fragmentation where it exists, attract additional specialists in improve access to care, address the needs of patients who present with co-morbid conditions, reduce the burden Emergency Departments face in addressing psychiatric and substance use problems, help reduce the overall cost of care for behavioral health patients, address the epidemic that exists regarding Opioid addictions, and have a dramatic impact on the psychiatric needs of children throughout the region. Spectrum has provided the leadership in developing community-wide needs assessments which are guiding its work in addressing these difficulties along with community partners. The Vice President of Behavioral Health will bring his/her experience, wisdom, expertise, and leadership skills to ensure Spectrum’s initiatives continue to be successful.

  • Have had solid experience in the public policy & advocacy area, particularly with governmental entities relative to behavioral health.

community partnerships through previous successes.

  • Be someone whose understanding of the dynamic health care world supports bringing a “vision” to the table that reflects healthcare trends and initiatives in the evolving healthcare delivery system at both the state and national level.
  • Have experience in working with Health Plans and Managed Care Organizations.
  • Possess a solid understanding of both the Social Determinants of Health and the tenets of Population Health to effect Spectrum program design and outcomes, leading efforts to improve access to care and clinical outcomes while reducing costs.
  • Have a track record of a commitment to Diversity and Inclusion in programming and staffing.
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communications skills given that this person is a highly visible representative of Spectrum and its behavioral health components.
  • Be effective at building credible and trusting relationships.
  • Have had a successful track record of “financial stewardship”; someone who has strong competencies in the financial management part a non-profit organization or a business. Commitment to data and analytics essential in order to achieve desirable outcomes.
  • Be able to demonstrate that he/she has been effective as a “change agent” while leading an organization in order to remain relevant and influential in an ever-changing external environment.
  • Be a “strategic thinker”; helping decision-makers and staff be successful in today’s environment while anticipating and planning for changes in the future.
  • Have a track record of working well with Senior Leadership across the system; must have a “team philosophy” and participatory management style.
  • Have clinical “content” and practice expertise in behavioral health, as well as administrative experience in a leadership role in a similar setting.
  • Be able to function effectively during challenging and stressful times. Must be comfortable managing conflicting agendas and helping others get to a “win-win” outcome, be “courageous, determined, and tough” as appropriate.
  • Be familiar with key issues such as health reform, integration, and Medicaid that will be of strategic importance as the VP assists Spectrum in their positioning for the future. This VP will lead Spectrum’s efforts to instill a “culture of integration” throughout the system.
  • Have familiarity with Michigan and the Midwest as it would help minimize the learning curve associated with this region, but outstanding candidates from across the country are welcome to apply.
  • Possess a high degree of Emotional Intelligence, which is highly correlated with leadership success, particularly in complex organizations.
  • Be committed to the growth and development of all staff and will lead efforts to formalize Executive Leadership initiatives.
  • Have a track record of developing innovative solutions and strategies for service delivery; promulgation of best practices.
  • Have experience with Joint Commission and other accrediting bodies.
  • Have experience in the design and implementation of Crisis Center models.
  • Have experience in working with metrics and performance contracting and value-based

reimbursement.

  • Should be willing to travel extensively within Michigan, as well as nationally where appropriate.
  • Doctoral level of training with a solid background in behavioral health practice and senior-level administration and a minimum of 10 years of such experience preferred.
