Principal Responsibilities:

The Jewish Federation of Durham Chapel Hill strives to provide programs and services that allow opportunities for people to engage and offer a sense of belonging to a vibrant community.Our Director of Engagement and Camp Shelanu is a fulltime, exempt position who reports directly to the Federation Chief Programming Officer, overseeing all areas of Engagement Programming. The main areas of programming this includes is camp, youth and family programming, child care, inclusion, and arts and culture.This position oversees our Youth and Camp Manager, Adults, Arts, Ideas, and Israel Center Program Manager, Community Midrasha and Teen Program Manager, and Child Care Manager year round, as well as seasonal camp staff.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Supervision of Engagement (20% school year – 10% summer)

  • Supervise Managers under Engagement department developing annual programmatic goals and implementation assisting the organization in fulfilling this key component of its mission – across age, interest, and abilities.
  • Set and model programmatic expectations ensuring strong execution.
  • Provide counsel, direction and other support to staff as needed.
  • Working with the Chief Programming Officer develop and manage budgets related to Camp, Youth and Family, Arts and Culture, Israel Center, and Child Care.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community colleagues to secure interns and seasonal employees.

Camp (60% school year – 85% summer)

  • Plan and market all aspects of summer camp.
  • Manage budget, registration, communication with camp families, and evaluation.
  • With assistance of the Youth and Camp Manager:

    • develop routines, policies, and procedures,
    • develop all of the programming, both current and new programming areas, including group schedules, specialist schedules, special programming, and Jewish programming, and
    • recruit, hire, schedule, coach, and evaluate the counselors
  • Supervise specialists in curriculum development, scheduling, supply requisition, etc,
  • Supervise the special needs inclusion program by working with staff to understand and incorporate camp’s inclusion philosophy
  • Plan, organize and execute pre-camp staff training orientation.
  • Serve as a resource and role model for campers and staff on all camp-related issues.
  • Act as manager-on-duty in a rotating schedule.

Youth/Family (20% school year – 5% summer)

  • Work with Youth and Camp Manager to implement annual Purim, Sukkot, and Hanukkah Festivals.
  • Organize Summer Food Truck Flicks.
  • Maintain personal contact with families and program participants, soliciting feedback and developing relationships.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree and significant experience in a youth/camp environment.
  • Ability to hire, train, and supervise staff.
  • Demonstrated program innovation & administration, preferably in children’s programming
  • Strong background/knowledge in Jewish education/themes/values, Jewish Holidays and Israel
  • Enthusiasm, adaptability, dependability, and an excellent work ethic.
  • Professionalism and excellent customer service skills.
  • Willingness to accept guidance and supervision.
  • Experience with special needs a plus.
  • Strong office skills and computer skills. (Word, Excel, ability to learn new database/software)
  • CPR and first aid certifications preferred (can be completed on the job)
  • Note: Requires some evening and weekend commitments.This position does not take vacation during the camp season and has limited ability to take vacation on School’s Out Days, which fall on many Jewish and Federal Holidays.
