SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking applicants for the position of Space Planning Project Manager in the Office of Facilities Management and Development. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Campus Planning, the primary responsibilities for the Space Planning Project Manager is managing projects by providing space planning expertise, maintaining space inventories and databases, analyzing space utilization, preparing special reports, space allocation plans, programming test fits and furniture plans, and updating campus AutoCAD plans.
In addition, the Space Planning Project Manager will:
- Lead and coordinate relocation and renovation projects on and off campus.
- Assist with space planning, campus planning, and move planning for new construction and renovation projects.
- Conduct field documentation, measurements, surveys and data collection of existing campus spaces.
- Assist with the development, maintenance and updating of a comprehensive space management database, including an inventory of all property, infrastructure, buildings, space, departmental allocations and assigned staff spaces. The inventory must be kept current at all times and include critical data about existing spaces, vacancies, uses and square footages. This will be coordinated with other campus data sets.
- Work directly with the Assistant Vice President of Campus Planning, and Senior Executive Leadership to oversee the development of SUNY Downstate’s Facilities Master Plan (“the Campus Facilities Master Plan”), working with University and Hospital leadership, the SUNY Downstate Research Foundation, HSCB Foundation and United Physicians of Brooklyn to incorporate management of affiliate space in use in collaboration with the rest of the campus.
- Manage the yearly review, square footages, characteristics, utilities and other services, furniture and equipment, usage, and classification using NCES FICM and SUNY PSI codes. Document and analyze space needs, programming information related to space requirements, adjacencies, and move requirements.
- Collaborate with SUNY Downstateâs Facilities Management Department, Design and Construction Group, Buildings & Grounds, Information Technology, Public Safety and Asset Management departments, and user groups to plan, coordinate and schedule moves for relocations and reconfigurations.
- Collaborate with consultants and contractors such as architects, engineers, furniture vendors and installers to develop and implement space and furniture plans. Develop new reporting tools and planning standards for future projects.

- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design or related field.
- A minimum of five (5) years of full-time professional experience in space planning, design, or construction management and administration.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite. Demonstrated knowledge of space planning principles and best practices.
- Understanding of government building codes, regulations and requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to work in a fast pace environment, handle multiple projects, and prioritize tasks to meeting deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups, including faculty, staff, students, contractors and users at all levels.
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight, and to provide technical expertise as an in-house planning resource.
- Technical experience in database systems development and maintenance, software or Computer-Aided Facility Management software (CAFM), especially with AIM Asssetworks, which will become SUNYâs application for space management.
PREFERRED:
- Experience in higher education or an academic facilities team environment, with healthcare planning experience and familiarity with FGI Guidelines preferred.
