Job Description
We are looking for a new Director, State Taxes to focus on a number of initiatives within our corporate finance group. In this role, you will own the external reporting, compliance, ongoing automation projects and the tax planning for John Hancock.
Core Responsibilities:
External Reporting
- Prepare, track and review all insurance and non-insurance company state income tax provisions and disclosures for IFRS, WW GAAP, NAIC, Bermuda and Separate Company US GAAP provisions (approximately 135 legal entities)
- Prepare and track all other state and local tax accruals, (i.e. premium tax, municipal tax, etc.)
- Handle any related true-up adjustments (i.e. premium tax, municipal tax, income tax, etc.)
- Prepare our Insurance Guaranty Assessment accruals, (i.e. premium tax, municipal tax, etc.)
- Lead all process documentation for SOX & MAR, including the identification, documentation and execution of key controls specific to state and local taxes
- Provide supporting documentation to assist with financial statement audits
- Run all state tax audits
- Provide your expertise to internal customers, (US Tax Reporting & Planning Team), external state taxing authorities, and all other relevant internal business units
Compliance
- Prepare, manage and review of all insurance and non-insurance state and local compliance in accordance with statutory deadlines, including: state income tax, premium tax, municipal tax, property tax, sales and use tax, and excise tax
- Complete all insurance guaranty assessments
- Oversee the tax calendar
Automation
- Transform and automate our state tax provisions for IFRS, WW GAAP, NAIC, Bermuda Stat and Separate Company US GAAP federal tax provisioning using OneSource Tax Provision Software
- Assist with the integration of OneSource Tax Provision with OneSource Income Tax software
Requirements:
- You have at least 10 years of public accounting experience in state and local tax compliance and provisioning, ideally at one of the “big 4” accounting firms
- Premium tax and insurance-specific experience
- You have your CPA and your MS in Taxation, or your certification in state and local income tax
- You are comfortable working as part of a large team, and are a dedicated teammate
- You are a strong leader, with experience managing high-performing employees
- You love mentoring and providing engaging technical training to your team
- You are a strong communicator, both verbally and in writing
- You demonstrate integrity and a good attitude at all times
