Schafer Industries is a well-established, privately held manufacturing company with approximately 300 employees located across multiple plant locations in the Midwest. Schafer is a leading producer of high-precision, custom-engineered gears and machined parts as well as axles, transaxles, transmissions, brake assemblies and other components for recreational and off-road applications. The company is an industry leader with significant plans for growth both organically and through acquisition. This position is based at corporate headquarters in St. Louis.
Overview:
The HR Director is a member of the leadership team reporting to the CEO. This is a full generalist role responsible for strategic and tactical management of HR policies and programs and supervises a field-based staff of three. The emphasis will be on serving as a business partner to the CEO and to a leadership team with a focus in the areas of recruitment and retention, employee relations, and change management. The Director of HR will partner with the holding company on a broad range of HR issues especially compensation and benefits, employee development and engagement. Schafer is owned by a holding company; as such, matrixed interaction with the parent company leadership (especially HR) is expected.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a strategic HR business partner to the leadership team, especially the CEO, as the company prepares for future growth, both organically and inorganically.
- Evaluate and develop new programs/strategies that affect attracting, developing and retaining talent company-wide. Oversee the recruiting and staffing process.
- Maintain working knowledge of talent needs, gaps, and challenges; enable workforce planning analytics and forecasting for staffing.
- Possess knowledge of employee benefit and compensation programs to ensure programs align with company core values and are effective at attracting and retaining talent.
- Work closely with managers on developing and conducting HR and leadership training, including, diversity, harassment, and leadership development training.
- Responsible for oversight and coordination of safety programs.
- Oversee employee and labor relations for the business.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable employment laws and regulations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field. HR certification a plus.
- Minimum 7-10 years broad HR generalist experience. Strengths in talent management, full lifecycle recruiting, and development and execution of creative retention strategies.
- Prior experience working in a manufacturing/industrial environment with hourly employees preferred.
- Capable of serving as both strategic business partner and sounding board to leadership as well as operating and collaborating in a “roll up your sleeves” environment.
- Demonstrated business savvy and strategic thought process with the ability to drive results at both the transactional and strategic levels to move the company forward.
- Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently in a relatively unstructured environment.
- Union experience a plus.
- Knowledge of HRIS (ADP) a plus.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a virtual (and matrixed) environment.
- Significant travel (30-35%) required to plant locations.
