Job Purpose
The Cruise Director shall lead, coordinate and facilitate, as well as perform, all aspects of the Entertainment program, including stage performances, informative lectures, cocktail parties, games, etc. This role also fosters a relaxing atmosphere of welcome and goodwill toward guests. The Cruise Director will establish personal relationships with guests while having an eye toward maximizing their satisfaction rating.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Rehearsing for and performing in stage shows
- Developing personal relationships with guests to maximize satisfaction (learn names, take an interest in personal history, engage in conversation, act as primary goodwill ambassador when problems occur)
- Schedule entertainment events onboard; coordinate with department heads to maximize efficiency and impact
- Manage Entertainment staff – handle scheduling and communication, provide training and administer Company disciplinary action program
- Lead and participate in games and activities for guests, including but not limited to trivia, on shore hikes, craft activities, game shows and exercise classes
- Act as Master of Ceremonies at onboard events, including but not limited to cocktail parties and evening shows
- Create and distribute the daily River Times newsletter
- Coordinate with and manage guest entertainers
- Operate and maintain onboard light, sound and A/V system
- Participate in weekly all-crew tasks, including but not limited to emergency drills, loading stores, carrying trash, cleaning crew areas, handling luggage and transporting crew using company vehicles
- Participate in all safety drills and training
- Ensure behavior and performance supports the company’s Mission; promotes year-round success of system
- Follow company values in responding to others in work situations

- Use recovery steps to respond to others who are dissatisfied
- Make hospitality standards an important part of day-to-day duties

- Promotes STEAM system: reinforces performance at or above standards and coaches performance below standard
- Solicits feedback; takes action to continuously improve success of team
- All other duties as assigned – may be assigned to assist other departments/crew with various tasks outside this Entertainment position description, i.e. dining room, luggage, bar, clean-up, etc.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- Education:
- HS Diploma or Equivalent Required
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in related field
- Professional Certification(s) or License:
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) – if applicable, and/or ability to obtain and maintain
- Copy of DD214, if Veteran status
- Skills & Abilities:
- Friendly and outgoing personality; excellent interpersonal skills
- Proficient stage performer
- Knowledge and experience with theatrical light and sound systems
- Proficient in the use of computers; familiarity with imaging and design software
- Ability to work with individuals at all levels of the organization
- Excellent verbal, as well as written, communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with varying deadlines
- Cruise industry experience preferred
- Managerial and/or teaching experience preferred
- Experience:
- 5-7 years of experience in position with similar duties and responsibilities
- Cruise industry experience preferred
- Other:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the USCG including but not limited to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident/incident testing.
Working Conditions:
The majority of work is performed in a Marine environment in both indoor and outdoor conditions with exposure to various temperatures and weather conditions, along with a moderate to loud noise level.
The Marine operation is subject to varied wake and motion.
Positions both live and work onboard a vessel, on a rotational basis for consecutive port-to-port voyages during the regular season.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand and walk on nearly a constant basis; ability to work long hours each day
- Ability to bend, rotate and reach frequently
- Ability to carry, push/pull and/or lift materials weighing upwards of 50 lbs
- Ascending/descending stairs or ladders safely
- Ability to manipulate/handle/grip materials required to perform job
- Ability to maneuver through/in/around small and/or confined areas within the vessel
- Must be able to maintain both static and dynamic standing balance to complete various duties associated with job
- Must be capable of performing emergency duties as listed in the vessel’s station bill
