Summary

This role leads the function responsible for early and late stage commercial development activities for all Spark non-clinical candidates and clinical assets, providing strategic leadership across the company by creating, championing and communicating a vision and overall strategy to all related stakeholder groups gaining commitment and support to guide development of product/asset commercial strategies.

Key activities for this role includes providing strategic leadership for the overall function, providing insight and guidance to the evaluation and prioritizion of internal growth opportunities for Spark’s portfolio, guiding market-driven commercial needs assessments, competitive/market reviews and business analytics to initiate and evolve programs in early (pre-clinical) research, post-proof of concept development, developing strategies for product launch through to LCM via the Spark candidate/asset stage gate process.

In addition this position provides strategic leadership and oversight into the development of positioning and messaging strategies for brands, early commercial input and leadership into the pipeline programs, commercial input into business development opportunities and ensuring launch excellence.

The role serves as both a strategist, a manager, and importantly a hands-on participant as a critical liaison between the R&D, manufacturing, regional and country commercial teams, Corporate Strategy & Planning, Pricing & Reiumbursement, and business development organizations. The ideal candidate will be able to influence these key constituents in an exceptionally high-growth environment

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a key member of the Commercial Leadership team and provide timely and thoughtful input on priorities for the organization
  • Create and support a consistent, linked strategic framework across early and late stage assets and ensure that all functions are aligned on the importance of this approach and are committed to doing so
  • Provide broad strategic leadership to ensure that plans for current and future products are fully aligned with the needs of US, EU and ROW markets.
  • Develop capabilities within market analytics function to support in-line and development assets and which can input to identification and assessment of new opportunities
  • Lead, manage, build and develop CD function
  • Form strong partnerships and Serve as a critical interface between internal functional area leads (e.g. R&D, Medical, Manufacturing, Commercial, Patient Advocacy, Market Access, Business Development, Portfolio and Strategy) and management of external partners (including qualitative and quantitative market research vendor relationships)
  • Provide commercial analysis and direction for the development and management of the product pipeline.
  • Assist in the identification of opportunities in the marketplace that will enhance the growth of the business and help assess business development activities to license in additional products by bringing a global market perspective.
  • Enable strategic decision-making including strategic context setting, decision structuring, risk assessment, value profiles, governance preparation, etc.
  • Work with commercial and R&D teams on commercial activities ahead of launch including core concepts, core positioning and messaging, Commercial input to Development and Regulatory teams, as well as marketing input for Pricing and Market Access
  • Partner with key portfolio stakeholders and leadership to ensure alignment with strategic imperatives, goal setting, and KPI achievement

  • Direct analysis of internal and external pipeline for strategic insight and efficient decision-making
  • Monitor competitor pipeline progress and industry benchmarking data, identify trends, risks and gaps and recommend specific strategies to enhance/optimize pipeline
  • Lead Marketing Analytics including market research, competitive intelligence, and developing secondary data and databases for growth opportunities
  • Manage global lifecycle management for commercial products, including brand development, commercial assessment, and competitive intelligence
  • Participate in due diligence activities as required and provide critical technical input for negotiations and/or completion of deals
  • Work/Lead ad hoc projects and/or initiatives
  • Contribute to initiatives supporting the portfolio prioritization and the development of new product opportunities to further establish Spark as a leader in selection, design, manufacture and formulation of highly optimized gene therapies
  • Represent commercial development function in various internal settings (leadership committees, Product Development Teams) to inform portfolio prioritization and strategy by articulating business cases based on strategic attractiveness, operational feasibility and analytical assessments
  • Provide strategic thinking and define a framework to evaluate portfolio evolution and trade-offs over time
  • Responsible to review and prioritize the current portfolio relative to future market needs, as well as new opportunities for internal research and external opportunities
  • Provide analytical perspectives and support (identification of unmet medical needs, assessment of differentiating attributes, market research, competitive intelligence)
Qualifications
  • Strong strategic marketing skills including the ability to develop commercial strategies based on a thorough and structured approach (i.e. asset playbook) paired with a strong scientific / clinical understanding.
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen with thorough understanding of P&L drivers and the ability to develop appropriate SG&A investment and top-line sales forecasts that generate long-term value.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in R&D or commercial business and/or commercial planning
  • Global experience required. Demonstrated ability to influence and manage a complex set of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prior rare diseases experience is essential
  • Strong track record managing multiple highly complex assessments on a global basis, coordinating input from across the organization and outside (partners) and quickly adjust to changing priorities
  • Proven ability to lead multiple projects efficiently and independently, with appropriate experience communication with executive management
  • Prior successful launch experience including development of commercial forecast and projections
  • Demonstrated success in commercial planning, launching, aggressively growing and managing products through their life cycle
  • B.A./B.S. degree required – MBA preferred
