Bristol Myers-Squibb (BMS) is seeking a new Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs to serve as a strategic partner and adviser to the company’s CEO and leadership team. This executive will be responsible for corporate affairs, communications, government relations and policy, and corporate social responsibility. S/he will develop a comprehensive and visionary strategy that protects, promotes and enhances BMS’ reputation among key stakeholders, articulates the company’s business strategy and leadership vision, protects the company’s market position and advances its policy goals, and develop storytelling and thought leadership that bring to life the ways in which the company is creating new possibilities in medicine to cure diseases and improve people’s lives.

The senior vice president will lead and continue to develop, improve and inspire a world-class corporate affairs, corporate social responsibility, global policy and global advocacy team of approximately 150 professionals. This leader will develop global strategy; build, manage and mentor a high performing team; and develop and implement a proactive, distinctive, integrated communications programs that articulate, strengthen, and unite all elements of the BMS brand.

Specifically, the senior vice president will be responsible for all media relations; government relations; policy; crisis/issues management; R&D and product communications; employee engagement; executive communications; community relations and patient engagement; CSR; content and thought leadership; social/digital communications; financial communications; and global advocacy. Critical to the role will be to earn credibility and engage authentically with key stakeholders—including the media; employees; patient advocacy groups; patients and their families; investors; government, regulatory and policy influencers; and global medical and research communities.

The senior vice president will be a hands-on, highly experienced leader who will lead in a fast-paced, complex, high-growth business environment. KEY
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement an integrated, progressive global communications strategy to advance BMS’ brand identity and reputation; broaden awareness of its medicines, programs, pipeline and business priorities; and increase the company’s visibility across key stakeholder audiences, both internal and external.
  • Provide leadership for a team of approximately 150 professionals, including media relations; crisis/issues management; government relations and policy; R&D and product communications; employee engagement; executive communications; community relations and patient engagement; CSR; financial communications; content and thought leadership; social/digital communications; advocacy; and branding activities.
  • Establish strong advisory relationships with the CEO and senior leadership team based on proven judgment and a deep understanding of BMS’ business, strategy, plans and performance.
  • Provide regular advice and counsel to the CEO and senior leadership team with regard to internal and external communications and messaging. Provide executives with a timely assessment of relevant issues and public sentiment along with their bearing on the company and its internal and external communications efforts.
  • Serve as one of the company’s primary media liaisons and spokespeople. Partner with media and third-party influencers to build advocacy and increase awareness.
  • Ensure BMS has world-class crisis management plans and procedures, and maintain an infrastructure to rapidly take action as required.
  • Collaborate with Investor Relations on financial communications activities, including messaging development for earnings, investor days, and key financial disclosures.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for BMS’ government relations, policy and advocacy functions, ensuring effective strategies that support broad business objectives and operating plans.
  • Initiate, cultivate and maintain relationships with high-level influencers to nurture and build the reputation of the business.
  • Develop and track clear metrics aligned to business goals, and adjust regularly to ensure maximum performance. Implement measurement programs that drive continuous improvement.
  • Develop an annual department budget, and manage within expectations.
