The Tennessee Performng Arts Center in Nashville is seeking an experienced, skilled and highly motivated Director of Security and Safety.

Who we are
The Tennessee Performing Arts Center is a nonprofit located in downtown Nashville and is dedicated to providing and supporting the presentation of the performing arts and culture. TPAC administers one of the largest and most comprehensive arts education programs in the United States, serving students from pre-school to high school, educators and adults. Over the past four decades, TPAC has welcomed 12 million audience members to our theaters. Located in the James K. Polk Cultural Center, TPAC occupies an entire city block between 5th and 6th Avenues and Deaderick and Union Streets. Performance venues include Andrew Jackson Hall (2,475 seats), James K. Polk Theater (1,075), Andrew Johnson Theater
(256), and the War Memorial Auditorium (1,661), a historic concert hall located across 6th Avenue from the Center.

Nashville is now a major market for Broadway tours and the Center presents a variety of special engagements from iconic performers, musicians, comedians, dance companies, and more.

In Residence
Nashville Ballet was founded in 1986 and has grown to be the largest professional ballet company in
Tennessee presenting a varied repertoire of classical ballet and contemporary works by noted choreographers.

Nashville Opera formed in 1975 when Maestro Thor John, Music Director for the Nashville Symphony, bequeathed a sum of money to the Center for the production of Opera.

Nashville Repertory Theater was founded in 1985 and is celebrating 35 years as Nashville’s premier regional theater company.

Join our team
The Director of Security and Safety will be the authority, as it pertains to the safety and security of the
Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) and War Memorial Auditorium. It is the responsibility of this position to establish, maintain, and evolve the security protocols of TPAC to meet the hightest and most current standards. The Director of Security and Safety will have direct oversight of security operations, security and life safety training, off-duty police and coodination of security services with the state of
Tennessee. Additionally, this position is responsible for development and administration of annual operating budget and coordination of capital projects related to security and life safety. This person is responsible for staff training in emergency management and serves as the “incident commander” during times of crisis.

This individual must be detail oriented, self-motivated and a strategic thinker with a broad knowledge of general business practices, theater operations, security procedures and the life safety code. The ability to interact effectively with public safety first responders is essential, as is the ability to keep confidential

information compartmentalized. Knowledge of current and evolving security technology, personnel functions and the ability to carefully and correctly react to stressful situations is a must.

This position must be operationally hands-on, but strategic in ensuring TPAC has the right plans, coverage and relationships to handle any potential threat or situation. Due to the nature of the industry, hours of operation calls for this position to maintain a flexible schedule and will work various performances and other events that fall on evenings, weekends and some holidays.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Counted among the responsibilities of the Director of Security and Safety, but not limited to:

1. Establishes and maintains the Crisis Management Plan including incident command protocols, crisis communication, and business recovery; establishes schedule and leads all staff training for emergencies and crisis including active shooter, bomb threats and first-aid/AED training, etc.
Plans and facilitates drills, testing and table top exercises.

2. Hires, trains and oversees the security department personnel in the performance of their duties including first response, accident investigations and reporting, wanding/bag checking, security screening, and managing disruptive persons. Develops employees into a team that works effectively and professionally. Responsible for performance evaluations, rewarding and disciplining officers as needed.

3. Maintain working knowledge of all front of house and back-of-house functions and protocols of
TPAC. Develops event and performance security directives, armed officer over hires, EMT over hires, schedules, and staff duties according to the needs of each event. Conduct pre-event advance research and risk assessments to identify specific risks and threats and arrange for additional support as required.

4. Establishes and maintains a relationship and open lines of communication with federal, state, and city officials, particularly the State Troopers, MNPD, State Fire Marshal, NFD and Dept. of
Homeland Security.

5. Manages and maintains the security infrastructure including hardware and software i.e. CCTV system, access control systems, emergency communication and notification system, etc., recommending improvements to address deficiencies and upgrades. Trains security staff in the operation of the access control systems, emergency communication and notification system,
CCTV system, and monitors their proficiency on each system.

6. Responsible for development and oversight of departmental and capital budgets, payroll, and scheduling for all venues and events related to security.

7. Oversees accident investigation procedures and acts as “Loss Control Officer”, seeking out and investigating the cause of injury associated with legal action against the property. Acts as a liaison between TPAC and the proper insurance carrier to eliminate the cause of liability.

8. Have a full and complete understanding of the technology required to perform duties. Constantly learn and implement new ways for technology to increase effectiveness and efficiency of work.

9. Engage in professional development in venue management, safety and other applicable fields.
10. Performs other duties as assigned by Chief Operating Officer.

Experience Required
Bachelor’s degree from four-year College or University; or 10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience and 5 years of significant management experience.

Experience in public assembly, venue management or crowd management in a live performance setting is preferred.

Graduate of IAVM’s Academy for Venue Safety & Security is helpful.

The following certifications must be obtained within first 90 days of hire.
Trained Crowd Manager
ICS 100: Introduction to the Incident Command System
ICS 200: Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response
ICS 300: Intermediate Incident Command Systems

The physical demands listed below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to sucessfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Requires a combination of sitting, walking, running, and climbing/descending of stairs, often doing each for prolonged periods of time
Demonstrate manual dexterity while using hands including heavy use of keyboard and handwriting notes.
Must also be able to reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel , crouch
May be required to periodically lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

Must have good vision to include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to focus while maneuvering through light and dark spaces and hallways

Work Environment
The following is a summary of the work environment for the position.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to sun, heat, cold, and on occasion adverse weather conditions such as wind, rain, hail, ice and snow. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to very noisy depending on the venue activity. The office areas are well-lit and room temperatures are controlled. Some work areas are subject to very low and very bright lighting levels, at times changing suddenly without notice. Flashing strobes, sudden loud noises, and varying degrees of visibility and temperatures are not uncommon due to event effects.

Language Skills

Excellent verbal and written English communication skills are required. Excellent understanding of body language is required (identify if someone needs help, is acting suspiciously, is feeling ill, is impaired, etc.)
Proficiency in other languages is highly desired
