This is a Federal position located in the Office of National Institute of Holocaust Documentation, Division of Curatorial Affairs, Branch of Archives, United States Holocaust Museum.

We are seeking a Supervisory Archivist *TEMP NTE 1 YEAR* (Director of Archives) with responsibility for supervising the day-to-day activities of the Archives, including special collections of accessioned, historical manuscripts, copies of microfilmed historical records and governmental archives obtained from abroad, and Federal records created by the Museum and Council. Establishes policies and procedures for the Archives as a functional component of the Museum; appraises archival material offered to the Museum; assesses needed preservation measures; approves and implements disposition policies and procedures for non-permanent and duplicative materials; and plans and implements survey trips to foreign repositories.

This is a temp not-to-exceed one year.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative and technical oversight to the day-to-day operations of the Archives Branch.
  • Appraises archival material offered to the Museum and assesses needed preservation measures.
  • Approves and implements disposition policies and procedures for non-permanent and duplicative materials.
  • Participates in planning survey trips for foreign repositories.
  • Supervises archives staff in the entry of cataloging descriptions into a computerized cataloging system.
  • Implements and directs the Museum’s institutional records program.
  • Oversees the registration of incoming collections of personal papers and microfilmed collections from foreign and domestic archival repositories.
  • Monitors the compilation finding aids of Holocaust-related records located at other repositories.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Professional knowledge of the fundamental principles and theoretical concepts of archival work.
  • Knowledge of Holocaust history and the significant events involved, including the documentation practices for the total period.
  • Working knowledge of the German language or another language directly related to the history of the Holocaust, such as Polish, Russian, French, Yiddish or Hebrew in order to appraise, organize, describe and perform reference on documents.
  • Ability to supervise and manage others.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in order to develop archival policies and procedures, make recommendations and presentations and to serve as spokesperson for the Branch.
  • Ability to organize, analyze and interpret non-current records and assess their value.
  • Knowledge of relevant holdings and available finding aids in other Foreign and domestic archival institutions.
