Position Summary:
Provide direction and support to designated Center of Innovation. Engage with Corporate Strategy and Research and Development leadership to define and set the strategic direction for designated COI.
The scope of this position is to plan and manage complex, multi-disciplinary research projects, that result in the development of new product principles, new technology, or a new understanding of NewCo’s core technology based upon goals set forth by the Business unit. The jobholder is responsible for managing, coaching and directing the work of jobholders’ direct reports in all areas of responsibility on the research project and for educating others in the technical organization in their area of expertise.
Job Responsibilities:
- Oversight of all knowledge building, innovation, and new platform research projects. Manage and execute all approved Research projects and programs in accordance with the targets of the Business Unit and reports on projects/programs in progress. Guide/manage and support personnel that are (temporary) assigned to the projects/programs. Work closely on defining long term projects with Corporate Strategy Organization.
- Manage the global ”Stage Gate” Research activities to respect the targets as set in the project plan. Execute feasibility studies as preparation of project proposals and prepare and write detailed project plans for approval by the Business Unit.
- Development and maintenance of core technologies. Build contacts with universities and research institutes or other third party collaboration for the purpose of acquiring know-how on core technologies, like processes, physics, chemistry, etc., needed not only to support the Product Development and the development of new product concepts, but also to support the business in general. Visit Customers to better understand market needs. Ensure interaction with Corporate research functions of customers to stay current on needs and trends.
- Manage, motivate and support the personal development of all staff in the COI community to ensure we have a no loss of capability or talent. Provide strong leadership as technical mentor for the complete team
- Communications: 1) Issue project plans and provide half year status reports on the running projects. 2) Write roll up overview reports when projects are finished. Continuously take care to keep the Development and Product management aware of new findings. 3) Serve as an effective communicator, recognized as technical authority within technical societies and in seminars. Knowledge 4) Ensure proper internal communication, training and presentations within the scope of the carry-over of knowledge concerning processes of customers, core technologies and product principles
- Maintain close relationships with Product Stewards & EHS to make sure that new technologies are aligned with global compliance requirements and restraints in terms of product risks.
- Coordination of patent applications, the writing of patent applications and the submitting of the applications for patent granting to the responsible authorities. Advise the [BU] on patent applications, write concept applications for our patent consultant and co-ordinate all activities for finalizing the patent application.
- Trains, supervises and is responsible for Work Safety in group, completes all necessary training, and ensures EH&S compliance for products and customer solutions. Responsible for Lab procedures, equipment and upkeep of ISO documentation.
- In consultation with the COI director, is responsible for hiring, training, developing, and evaluating lab personnel.
- Manage the Local lab Budget, or budget segment, in accordance with the approved budget.
- Follow/initiate/drive CSR/sustainability agreements.
- Other duties and projects as assigned.
Education, Experience, Skills & Competencies:
- B.S. in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, preferably Master’s Degree or PhD
- A minimum of 10-15 years of industrial chemistry experience of progressive R&D/technology leadership at global chemical business or other highly regulated business.
- 5+ years supervisory experience preferred
- Demonstrated ability to deliver large projects of increasing complexity and scale. Ability to think analytically.
- Executive level communication skills. Command of the English language, verbally and written.
- Ability to be highly influential; can create and relay a business case as require, capability to manage and motivate professional staff members.
- Well versed in key R&D methods and project management (e.g. stage gate process management, six sigma, KPIs).
- Strong business acumen: links technology to financial performance and strategic objectives.
- Disciplined people-manager; outstanding record and capability of recruiting, developing, motivating and coaching a world-class industrial organization with a broad customer focus.
