Innovate@UCLA is a membership-based program sponsored by the UCLA Office of Information Technology under the leadership of the UCLA Vice Provost, IT. Innovate@UCLA acts as a liaison between UCLA and the Southern California technology community across a variety of industries, including Fortune 500, midsize and startup enterprises and the public sector. The mission of Innovate@UCLA is to inspire business innovation and research through emerging technologies.

The Executive Director serves as the external face and public spokesperson for Innovate@UCLA. Attends outside Executive level functions and events, as appropriate, to represent the organization and develop a rapport with the Southern California technology community at large. The Executive Director establishes and maintains relationships with various organizations and utilizes those relationships to strategically enhance Innovate@UCLA’s mission and strengthen its value proposition.

The Executive Director understands and upholds the values and mission of UCLA and OIT. Liaises with the university to ensure fiscal integrity and compliance with university policies, procedures and guidelines. Works directly with Managing Director, OIT, and seeks the involvement of the Executive board to develop the annual budget, provide financial reporting, and ensuring the financial stability of the program.

The Executive Director is a permanent member of the Executive Board, the Executive and Governance committees, and actively participates on other board committees sufficient for the understanding and execution of Innovate@UCLA’s strategic goals and mitigating issues across program stakeholders.

The Executive Director manages the strategic objectives of Innovate@UCLA through programs, business development, board governance, and marketing and outreach efforts, working in collaboration with the UCLA OIT Staff and Executive board.

The Executive Director ensures bylaws, operating guidelines, and committee charters are current as directed by the Governance committee, within UCLA policies and guidelines, and adhered to by the board members. Presents quarterly reports on business progress to help guide the affairs of the Executive Board.

1. Strong networking skills to be an effective liaison to the Southern California technology community, utilizing current network as appropriate.

2. Strong communication and public speaking ability, written and verbal skills to produce and present clear, complete, engaging, accurate and well-organized talks, proposals, publications, reports, and presentations.

3. Strong interpersonal skills sufficient to establish constructive and cooperative working relationships with C-suite and senior executives, peers, faculty, staff, and students.

4. High-level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization’s mission and strategic future to the potential and current members, board, staff, and sponsors.

5. Ability to quickly mitigate and arbitrate issues, communicate concerns, and execute solutions as beneficial to the organization.

6. Self-starter and proactive in executing tasks and goals. Excellent follow-through, accountability, organizational skills. Owns processes, tasks, and project outcomes.

7. Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting.

8. Seven or more years senior technology management experience

9. Active fundraising and/or sponsorship development experience. Excellent sponsor relations skills and understanding of the sponsorship community.
