Position Description and Board Expectations:
The YMCA of the Foothills Board of Directors seeks a successful visionary leader who will build upon strong executive leadership, promote the mission and continue a culture of excellence within the organization. The CEO will be visible in the community and active in the development of meaningful community partnerships to position the Y to be viewed as a strong charitable partner.
Qualified candidates must possess a strong sense of business acumen, community outreach experience, strategic planning and leadership skills. The ability to take initiative, motivate, delegate and lead others successfully are also essential components. Qualified candidates must demonstrate strong skills in developing an effective and energetic staff team. They must possess: a proven track record with implementing and promoting services to the community; assessing community needs and developing programs in partnership with others to meet those needs; raising funds through annual and capital campaigns; developing staff; and working with a Board that focuses on strategic issues.
Hiring Range: $TBD commensurate with experience.
Residency Expectation: Living in the YMCA’s service area is required.
Benefits: The YMCA participates in the Y Retirement Program at a 10% rate, with the YMCA contributing 10%. Vacation plan, health plan, relocation reimbursement, and other benefits provided.

Staff: There are currently 50 full time staff, 250 part time and 50 seasonal staff serving our membership and programs. The CEO supervises four direct reports that include a COO, CFO, VP of HR, Director of Development and Administrative Assistant.
Volunteers: The YMCA engages 732 volunteers and works with three organizations to provide individuals with diverse abilities volunteer jobs; Tierra del Sol, Ability First, and Liberty.
Facility Description:
- Crescenta:Canada Family YMCA: The facility original building built in 1956 and newer building built in 1994. General condition of the buildings and property is fair to good with deferred maintenance. Facility features include lap pool, teaching pool and Spa. 3 racquetball courts, basketball gym, men and women’s and boys and girls locker rooms, four separate group exercise rooms, cycle Studio, 3 cardio and strength rooms, large multi-purpose room and a series of smaller spaces and offices.
- Verdugo Hills Family YMCA: The original front building was built in 1989. The wellness center, basketball gym and one of the multi-use rooms was added on in 2004. The general condition of the property and facility is good. Facility features include basketball gym, lap pool, preschool, outdoor half basketball court, one large cardio and strength room, 3 multi-purpose spaces for meetings and group exercise, male and female locker rooms.
- Crescenta-Canada Family YMCA: The original building was built in the late 70s as a racquetball center with eight racquetball courts. In the late 80s a wood frame structure was added on to provide locker rooms and additional group exercise space. The general condition of the facility and property is fair to good. Facility features include a 15 yd outdoor pool, yoga room, large group exercise room, multiple strength training rooms and Cardio, cycle Studio, male and female locker rooms.

Day Camp – YMCA Camp nurtures the potential of youth to develop positive relationships and a sense of belonging. Y camps offer opportunities to build and strengthen positive character values and appreciate the differences in others. Bonds built bring participants back year after year and lead to lifelong friendships.
Campers of all ages and abilities find success through the skill-building opportunities of camp programs, having fun and learning confidence and values. Resident Camp – YMCA Resident Camp offers a chance to unplug and reconnect with the outdoors. At camp, each camper will experience fun-filled activities like swimming, marine lab, tide pooling, fishing, kayaking, ropes course, archery, rock wall, snorkeling, volleyball, and gaga games. Swim Lessons – Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity. And swimming is a life skill; something to be a sport, a form of exercise, a way to stay active and healthy, a way to meet new friends, and a way to build confidence. The Y is “America’s Swim Instructor” and the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming. Youth & Government/MUN – Youth and Government is a national YMCA program for students in the 9th – 12th grades. The program enables young adults to prepare for post-high school opportunities via moral and political leadership through training in the theory and practice of developing public policy. Youth Sports – Basketball: CCY- Join the best basketball program in the community. After all, The Y invented basketball! James Naismith, a teacher at the international YMCA training school, invented basketball in 1891. He was challenged to create a game that could be played indoors during the cold winter months. By hanging simple peach baskets and using a soccer ball, Naismith created the game of basketball and wrote the first 13 rules of the game.
Youth Basketball encourages and promotes healthy kids, families and communities by prioritizing family involvement, wholesome competition and the value of participation – not just winning. Kids and teens learn team-building skills, a sense of fair play and mutual respect for others, while also growing as individuals and developing a positive self-image. Youth Basketball is held during the spring, summer, and fall months for youths ages 5 – 14. The YMCA of the Foothills Learning Tree Preschool is committed to caring for your children just as you would. For over 20 years, we have provided our community with a safe, nurturing environment for children to learn, grow, and develop.
The Learning Tree Preschool at the YMCA of the Foothills strives to not only prepare our students for kindergarten, but for the rest of their lives. We feel it is just as important to develop the individual, as we do with teaching the ABC’s and 123’s. Like many of our programs for older youth, our goal for our students is to build independence, self-esteem, and confidence. That is why it is so important to teach them these attributes at an early age.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications for Candidates:
- Accredited 4-year college degree.
- Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Minimum of ten years of experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or a comparable corporate organization, and related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
- Budgetary and fiscal management experience of organizations with assets of more than $7M annually.
- Must have proven ability to identify and subsequently develop suitable community candidates and strengthen relationships with them.
Preferred Qualifications for Candidates:
- Strategic planning and fundraising experience, including annual campaigns and the securing of grants from a variety of available sources.
- Experience leading an organization with multiple facilities or locations.
- YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. (Note: Candidates not in possession of this certification have up to three years to obtain it through Y-USA.)
Essential Functions
Key Deliverables:
- Advocate the YMCA Vision Within the Community:Serve as ambassador for the mission, goals and values of the YMCA. Lead efforts with increasing membership and delivering high quality programs to the community. Actively interact and communicate with the communities in the region as a representative of the YMCA. Represent the YMCA’s mission to community leaders, donors, staff and volunteers. Assure existing strong partnerships are fostered, and new partnerships are created. Be seen and respected as a leader within the community, while proactively creating collaborations to enhance outreach and program initiatives.
- Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan:The new leader will work effectively with volunteers, key staff, and the YMCA of the USA to create and develop a strategic roadmap that addresses opportunities and challenges related to the community’s support of facilities and programs, with defined organizational strategies. The CEO will lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. The CEO will lead volunteers in creating and aligning committees and their respective responsibilities to support the strategies and goals of the association. Plan should include strategies to improve the quality of services offered to current families engaged in the YMCA and elevate the public standing in the community as the charity of choice for new families in surrounding communities.
- Fiscal Management:The CEO will be expected to use a high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth, and stability, while consistently leading the organization to balance or surplus the annual budget through earned revenue, contributions, and controlling costs. The successful candidate will empower and guide staff leaders on the successful financial operation of their areas of responsibility, as well as monitor the budget closely to address competition impacting membership, address facility needs, and anticipate financial impact on the organization.
- Maintain and Lead through Positive Culture:Continue to strengthen a culture of inclusion, diversity, integrity, character and life-long learning within the YMCA organization that reinforces, encourages, and promotes values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
- Develop and Manage the Staff Team:The YMCA seeks a “servant leader” who can inspire a positive attitude and build a cohesive team. The new CEO will create a plan to build unity, encourage teamwork, set operational goals tied to a strategic plan, hold staff accountable, and foster individual staff development. Lead by example; remain actively engaged in staff development and performance leading to superior results in programs, member satisfaction and community engagement.
- Improve Operating Performance:The YMCA is seeking someone that will work with the Board to develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives that will support the YMCA facilities. The successful candidate will remain fully informed of all operational issues and have the acquired ability to quickly address any issues that might arise as well as forecast future needs. Opportunities will be identified to enhance membership and program offerings. The operating plan should address the competition, any remaining debt, and the enhancement of membership and program services with a focus on reaching new communities.
