This position manages the international services function by overseeing and directing the administration and operation of the services providing advice and counsel to international students and faculty.
Manage the Office of International Services programs, operations and activities. Advise management regarding overall program needs and effectiveness.
Conduct needs assessment and review the effectiveness of programs and policies. Establish and implement policies and operational procedures. Revise existing or develop new programs consistent with departmental strategy.
Recommend or approve immigration related benefits to international students and scholars including employment, extension of legal stay and issues regarding maintaining legal status in the United States.
Monitor the effectiveness of programs and policies and develop new plans or procedures consistent with regulatory compliance, emerging trends and efficient departmental operations.
Liaise with external groups including the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Labor and the Department of State to resolve issues or provide and receive information.
Coach, counsel and assist academic department management and faculty on immigration law, compliance, regulations and procedures and recommended course of action.
Advise and counsel international students and faculty on regulatory and administrative issues related their immigration status including: immigration and visa procedures, maintaining legal status, employment status, extension of stay, change of status, cultural and financial needs, travel regulations, etc.
Plan, assign and review work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hire, train, develop and manage staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, humanities or a related field required. Master’s degree in higher education, international studies or a related field preferred. Strong knowledge of immigration laws, regulations and procedures. Ability to meet both the USDHS’s regulatory requirements to be a Designated School Official (F-1 program) and the U.S. Department of State’s J-1 Visitor Program as an Alternate Responsible Officer.
Minimum of six years’ experience in an office responsible for interpreting and applying government regulations and statutes that pertain to nonimmigrant students (F-1, J-1, other) is required. Supervisory experience required.
Working knowledge of H-1B, TN, LPR, O-1 and J-1 processes. Strong analytical skills, the ability to comprehend and synthesize various regulations, and the ability to resolve complex immigration problems.
