Job Summary
California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) seeks a collaborative, transformative, and visionary leader who will creatively guide and have primary responsibility for the academic mission of the university. Reporting directly to the University President, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is a member of the President’s Cabinet and one of six vice presidents of the University. As a Hispanic-serving institution, CSUF seeks a Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs who has experience with addressing the needs of a complex diverse campus population primarily comprised of first-generation and commuter students. The Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs will provide academic and strategic leadership for all of the University’s undergraduate, graduate, research and public service programs. In addition, they will provide leadership to more than 3,000 faculty and 300 staff members and eight colleges, Academic Programs, Academic Operations, Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness, Academic Finances and Space Management, Research and Sponsored Projects, Strategic Initiatives, South County Operations and Initiatives, Library, and Extension and International Programs. The incumbent must have a clear understanding of national educational policies and how to influence those policies for a model comprehensive university. The successful candidate will be an effective and empowering manager, an advocate for diversity and inclusion across campus, an experienced partner in shared, collegial university governance, as well a collaborator who can continue to build relationships with the community to gain support for and understanding of the institution.
Primary Responsibilities
Create the conditions for the successful implementation of the University’s strategic plan and the formulation and articulation of clear goals for the University’s academic officers with respect to University priorities.
Work closely with the President, college deans and other officers in Academic Affairs regarding all instructionally related planning and operational matters.
Focus resources toward achievement of the University’s strategic plan.
Develop an academic vision where student success, strategic enrollment and retention are top priorities. Collaborate and stimulate collegiality and cooperation with faculty during the process of academic program, course design, and development.
Work jointly with key leaders across the University, including the vice presidents, Council of Deans, and Associated Students Inc.
Support and lead initiatives to recruit and retain an outstanding and diverse faculty.
Use strong budget and finance knowledge to plan and administer annual budgeting process for Academic Affairs and manage resources to meet strategic goals.
Promote faculty leadership through active engagement and support faculty in teaching, research, creative activity, professional development and service
Essential Qualifications
Earned a doctorate or appropriate terminal degree in a discipline offered at the University. Completed at least six years of academic administrative experience, and at least three years leading an academic unit at the level of dean or higher. Earned academic credentials for a tenured full professor or equivalent. Demonstrated substantive budget management experience in a multifaceted financial environment with a focus on meeting strategic goals. Demonstrated leadership in addressing the complexities of serving the educational needs of a multicultural environment and success in promoting and resourcing initiatives that lead to equity and inclusion.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Demonstrated capacity for mentoring of deans, associate vice presidents, and other academic personnel.
Demonstrated success in strategic planning and strategic enrollment management.
Demonstrated competencies in the listed responsibilities of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at California State University, Fullerton.
Demonstrated commitment to shared governance and working within a collective bargaining environment in a democratic, flexible style.
Demonstrated ability in implementing institutional-level, programmatic initiatives aimed at addressing issues of diversity and inclusion in the service of providing high quality education leading to student success.
Evidence of partnerships with the broader community.
Demonstrated commitment to the values of a liberal arts education at a master’s comprehensive university.
Demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing Hispanic-serving institutions and higher education today and the ability to address them in a large comprehensive university with positive outcomes.
