Job Description
NREL’s Laboratory Program Manager for Advanced Manufacturing has an opening for a full-time Project Manager. The primary responsibility of this role is to provide project management, planning, and tracking support to research staff, primarily supporting the advanced manufacturing Lab Program Manager and the recently awarded Energy-Water Desalination Hub team. The emphasis of this role is on project administration including planning, coordination, budgeting and reporting. The project manager will work under the guidance of senior staff to manage the execution of project objectives and deliverables while assisting to keep project deliverables on time and within budget. The team will rely on the candidate to provide direction for project assignments and issues.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Project planning and scheduling, budgeting, documentation management, and regular reporting. Subcontracts administration including accruals, approving invoices and tracking deliverables. Scheduling of project meetings and task coordination to keep milestones and deliverables on track. Reporting to leadership and management regarding staff and technical resource availability and utilization.
Expected Job Duties
- Developing project management activities: creating schedules, inputting planning data in to relevant NREL planning and financial tools, extracting data from relevant financial tools, monitoring progress against deliverables, tracking costs against plans across multiple projects of varying size, scope and complexity.
- Implementing and managing project control systems, and utilizing these systems to integrate project data for decision makers to consider.
- Completing regular assessments of project progress and finances and updating of plans when indicated.
- Preparing reports, presentations, and group communications to internal stakeholders and leadership.
- Preparing project documentation including metrics and budget tracking and reporting.
- Supporting the development of proposals and work plans by coordinating with PIs, developing draft materials, compiling, uploading materials, etc.
- Managing and coordinating subcontracting and procurement procedures
- Coordinate regularly with other support teams (e.g. communications and finance).

Basic Qualifications
Relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Additional Required Qualifications
- General knowledge of, and ability to apply, project management principles, concepts, practices and standards.
- Proficiency and experience using Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) as well as other computer software programs needed to effectively track and manage a project.
- Ability to understand and navigate financial planning and tracking systems including NREL specific applications (e.g., EPP, NQuIRE, iProcurement) in order to gather and interpret project control relevant data.
- Ability to prepare professional communications that are appropriate for internal leadership and external stakeholders.
- Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming, and collaboration skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving, time management, and self-organization skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
- Expertise with project management including experience in finance, marketing, and business processes.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with team members and project leaders.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, especially as it applies to project performance, tracking and reporting.
- Desire to continually develop project management skills, including learning how to use and apply new project management tools or using existing tools to meet project management needs.
- Strong interest in learning about technical and institutional aspects of projects.
- Experience as an analyst of data and metrics to assess program impact.
- Thrives in a fast paced, innovative environment.
- Initiates projects, works unsupervised, completes tasks independently, solves roadblocks, and does whatever it takes to drive results.
- Excellent prioritization and ability to manage multiple assignments.
- Knowledge of national laboratory structures and processes.
