The Regional Director, (RD), is a senior leader with responsibility for the direct support of 24 local departments of social services (LDSS) in the Piedmont Region. The RD will provide a regular state presence representing the mission, vision, values, and strategies of the Virginia Department of Social Services. Specifically, the RD will work directly with the LDSS directors providing consultation, training, and workforce development. The RD also works in collaboration with local government officials, local social services boards, and other stakeholders at the State and local levels to ensure the optimal administration of Social Services programs and initiatives.

The RD manages a team of Practice Consultants and administrative staff that provides consultation and advocacy, performance and fiscal management, makes recommendations for business process improvements and offer other supportive services. The Regional Director also acts as a liaison between state and local entities and assists with facilitation of resources. The RD will advise and carry out personnel administration functions, such as hiring, performance planning/management/evaluation and oversee administrative functions, such as establishing/monitoring budgets and facilities/vehicle management.

This position reports to the Director of Local Engagement and Support.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable experience leading human services programs making customers and their needs a primary focus. Develops and sustains productive customer relationships, takes actions to meet customer needs and designs feedback systems. Implements best practices, collaborates with all levels of employees to influence performance improvement, and provide supervision and leadership to professional and administrative staff, as well as office operations and budget. Experience monitoring organizational effectiveness, including use of performance metrics and related tools. Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Demonstrated ability to: work well with people at all levels; drive desired results; consistently and independently prioritize; exercise sound judgment and maintain complete discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive matters. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor or advanced degree in public administration, human services, or business or any combination of education and experience that would ensure success in the position.
Demonstrated focus on providing leadership and implementing solutions in a changing environment.

Understanding of and ability to operate effectively within a state supervised-locally administered structure.
Management experience in a state or local human services environment preferred.

Special Requirements

Management approval to telework is contingent upon successful completion of 6 months of employment and the business needs of the work unit.

Selected candidate(s) must successfully pass a fingerprint-based criminal history background check.

Selected candidate(s) will be assigned to an emergency role upon hire and is expected to perform in that capacity as needed.
Telework is a condition of employment for this position. The employee may be required to work a schedule that is split between remote and onsite (shared workspace) locations.
A motor vehicle check will be conducted on selected candidate(s).
Frequent in-state, overnight travel may be required. Selected candidate(s) may be required to use their personal vehicle or state vehicle as available for business use.
