Job Summary
The Head of Data Science – Personal Lines is responsible for equipping the Personal Lines group within Farmers Insurance with the data & analytical infrastructure it needs to accurately measure & manage the business. This individual will lead a team that will establish a single source of truth across key measures & KPIs, providing a clear and precise sense of a) how we’re pacing to our goals, b) where we need to focus our attention, and c) develop a strategic plan that supports the modernization of Underwriting and utilization of AI, automation and predictive analytics throughout the function. This leader will provide direction to a team that will support development of custom dashboards and recurring reporting, and be the go-to resource for ensuring an accurate view and understanding of business performance is accessible to stakeholders.
This individual will mentor and lead a group of data analysts who love to tell stories by distilling complex data sets into clear, actionable insights. This position will report to the President of Personal Lines.
This position will pull together all analytics across the business units under Product – Personal Lines, Service Ops, Specialty, Bristol West, and coordinate with existing data teams to be strategic and creative.
Essential Job Functions
  • Develop, design and deploy the vision, infrastructure, capabilities and multi-year roadmap for managing the analytics and automation capability within Personal Lines
  • Support the needs of the functional units (UW, Service Ops, Product, PL Operations) within Personal Lines to improve existing use cases as well as develop new use cases to enable strategy execution.
  • Develop strategies and processes for how to enable and optimize AI and automation of processes throughout the organization.
  • Partner with other functional analytics teams in identifying Customer 360 applications, creating Big Data applications via utilizing structured and unstructured data, designing the optimal data architecture for new scaled platforms, and experimenting with machine learning techniques to support the near and longer-term strategic needs for Personal Lines
  • Build out analytics talent needs via role definition and developing a team of analysts to drive strategic execution
  • Drive evangelization and education of Data Sciences throughout Personal Lines by communicating the vision, value and pragmatic use cases of advanced analytics.
  • Serve as trusted advisor to others within the executive leadership team in the creation and deployment of insights to inform and activate Personal Lines strategies. This includes strong communication skills in translating models, validation and key findings to executive leadership and stakeholder presentations.
  • Be a leading innovator in the company defining how we can create additional value utilizing our data assets and analytics.
  • Establish a clear management pipeline of ongoing projects and deliverables to stakeholders and business partners
  • Manage and develop a team
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university
  • Master’s degree preferred but not required in fields such as mathematics, business, statistics, computer science, engineering, operations research or other advanced analytic programs
  • 5+ years working with senior executive management partnering in solving complex business problems
  • 8-10 years of experience leading a high-performing team of data analysts
  • Strong ability to translate business objectives to analytics team
  • Expert understanding of computers and database software, statistical and modeling packages (Statistica, R, Matlab, SAS), visualization and other advanced analysis tools
  • Strong project management skills
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and to meet changing deadlines and priorities on multiple simultaneous projects
  • Proven track record of working with and influencing cross-functional senior executives
