What You’ll Do:
Champion Safety. Take an active role in prioritizing safety throughout the operation for yourself and others at all times in accordance with MSHA, OSHA, and Vulcan standards.
Lead Division Safety & Health Department. Advise management at all levels of the organization of prevention methods to assist in the reduction of injuries, risk, and cost. Provide leadership and manage the division’s Safety & Health Representatives and support staff in the performance of their responsibilities. Attract, maintain, and motivate high level talent dedicated to the strategic objectives of the division. Effectively manage, develop, coach, and motivate staff.
Analyze Data and Trends. Analyze and determine trends in accidents, and design and implement corrective measures when necessary. Consolidate and maintain all safety, health, and claims reports and analytical data to ensure proper documentation.
Collaborate with Operations. Work jointly and collaboratively with operations management to improve efficiencies, control Safety and Health related costs, and influence employee behaviors and attitudes toward safety and health.
Develop Programs and Initiatives. Develop and maintain an effective and proactive safety program with innovative ideas and elements. Develop programs, procedures, and training initiatives to provide for the protection of individuals, property, and the company’s business interests. Manage the Division’s industrial hygiene program.
Communicate with Agencies. Serve as a liaison with regulatory agency representatives, including MSHA, OSHA, and D.O.T. to coordinate and resolve safety regulation issues. Represent the Company and maintain an open line of communication with state and federal agencies, independent adjusters, lawyers, doctors, hospitals, Vulcan managers, supervisors, and employee claimants to provide for comprehensive management of regulatory issues and claims in compliance with state and federal laws and company policy.
Manage Investigations. Obtain all factual data to identify root causes and develop and implement corrective action plans for future prevention of safety incidents. Participate in the investigation process for all accidents, incidents, and injuries.
Direct Facility Audits. Direct and conduct facility audits to evaluate the effectiveness of management systems for identifying and managing risks, accident prevention activities, and industrial hygiene control. Evaluate accident potential in new and existing operations and implement preventive accident measures.
Monitor Laws and Regulations. Stay abreast of professional and technical development to maintain and improve safety and health knowledge, skills, and performance. Measure effectiveness of programs and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
Champion Continuous Improvement. Develop and direct strategy implementation to effectively resolve health and safety issues, control risk and liability, and promote effective workplace policies, practices, and behaviors. Review internal safety policies and practices and make necessary recommendations to ensure that they are current and appropriate. Qualifications
Skills You’ll Need :
Education. A Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, or Engineering is preferred.
Certifications. Certified Safety Professional (C.S.P.) and/or a Certified Industrial Hygienist (C.I.H.) is preferred.
Experience. Must have 10 years of progressive professional experience in safety and health management, accident prevention, and regulatory compliance. Must have 5 years of supervisory and management experience. Must have experience in performing accident investigations, reporting/follow-up for investigations, and industrial hygiene exposure monitoring.
Regulatory Knowledge. Must have an extensive knowledge of regulations relating to occupational health and safety, including but not limited to MSHA, OSHA, D.O.T., and workers’ compensation laws.
Operations Knowledge. Must have a working knowledge of contracting, mining, rock and sand, asphalt, ready mix batch plant, fleet, and landfill operations.
Safety Knowledge. Must have detailed knowledge of behavior-based safety approaches and Safety and Health Management Systems (OSHAS 18001, ISO 14000, OSHA VPP, etc.) Must have extensive knowledge of safety and loss control management, safety standards, regulations, and best safety practices. Must have advanced skills in accident investigation, root cause analysis, hazard analysis, and hazard control.
Interpersonal Skills. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate and work with people at all levels of the organization, as well as with outside government and private sector professionals.
Leadership Skills. Must have strong leadership skills and the ability to influence and engage others in a proactive approach to safety and health.
Organizational Skills. Must have strong organizational skills. Must have the ability to balance multiple tasks in a high-stress environment. Must be detail-oriented. Must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Analytical Skills. Must have strong problem solving and analytical skills. Must have the ability to creatively solve problems with the application of well-developed technical knowledge, relevant industry skills, and previous experience.
Technology Skills. Must have skills in PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and in operating computer systems and databases.
