Vice President, Design- Platform Services

Every day, more than 10,000 people at Capital One and external developer communities directly benefit from the work you and your 30 designers do. That’s because you’re leading the design of Capital One’s data ecosystem—the foundational, adaptive experiences serving analysts, developers, and data scientists the rich context they need to make great decisions that advance the business and customer experience.

You’ll lead the experience vision, evolution, and expansion of a new enterprise platform called The Exchange. It’s where internal associates publish, manage, find, and use data from across Capital One’s ecosystem. Additionally, you’ll be partnering with lines of business leaders to identify, prioritize, and innersource new capabilities to The Exchange (thereby extending its functionality to new groups of users across the business).

Plus, you’ll be the creative leader for our internal Design System, which dozens of burgeoning products and platforms are leveraging to drive their experiences. Finally, you’ll also lead our external-facing developer platforms, DevExchange and Capital One Tech.

Specifically in this role, you’ll be accountable for a few things:

Cultivating an empowered team of designers

Your team spans a few geographies—in our SF office on 3rd street, our campus in Richmond (VA), and also our headquarters just outside DC (McLean, VA). It includes a multitude of specialists and generalists in all design and research disciplines. They’re a super active bunch in constant communication, collaborating in design studios and experience reviews, or getting together for volunteer events and conferences.

In your first 90 days, you’ll jump in to get to know them so you can best understand what’s working and what needs to change. You’ll share your leadership philosophy so they know where you’re coming from and what you expect of them, so you can all do the kind of work you care about while also advancing your careers, the business, and the experiences our associates have.

Informing and driving outcomes, with Product and Tech partners

Also in the first 90 days, you’ll get in lock-step with your product and tech partners. Together, you’re making crucial decisions about the direction, priorities, and experience quality that hundreds of people reporting into your leadership circle will be accountable to inform and deliver. So you’ll need to have a powerful imagination, and also be great at listening, inspiring, being direct, putting ideas on the table, and executing to achieve shared results.

We live in a world where real-time data and AI-powered experiences are becoming the norm, and in which privacy and security are paramount. You’re leading the design of our internal ecosystem—the operating system of Capital One’s future—and will be required to deeply understand the needs of our data producers and consumers. So embracing the opportunity and responsibility to design experiences that enable others to do their best work-in a well-managed, secure way!-will be an always-on aspect of this job.

Your peers in Integrated Experiences can help you on that, as they are aligned with some of our most high-need internal-facing audiences (Risk Management, Finance, Data Science, Machine Learning, Privacy and Data Ethics, Responsible AI). Plus, design leaders aligned to each customer-facing business (Card, Bank, Auto, Commercial, Small Business) can help, too.

Holding a high bar for Experience Quality

You’ll be accountable for experience quality—defining the bar for what to expect from your designers, and making necessary tradeoffs to mitigate risks and continue iteratively delivering and learning on what’s been released already.

Under your leadership, your team will define learning agendas to guide design sprints and the underlying system design. For example, how might we help associates find the data sets and APIs they’re looking for, and discover relevant new ones they might not have known about? How might the interface adapt, powered by ML-driven experience models, so we can more quickly arrive at a future that propels our associates to spend more time solving hard problems and less time searching for data? These are the kinds of questions you’ll guide your team to ask, create a strategy to answer, then measure as the year and experiences unfold.

Whew! So, that’s the gist of this opportunity. And if we zoom out just a bit, this role reports into the Vice President of Integrated Experiences (Steph Hay) and is part of a larger Experience Design team led by Heather Winkle. The Experience Design team stays connected across multiple locations through a weekly all-hands called What’s Up Thursday, where designers join to hear guest speakers, share their work, and generally support the growth of our discipline and each other. Plus there’s an annual lip-sync battle that gets pretty real.
