SUMMARY:
UMMA is looking for a Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer to assist the CEO with developing, communicating, executing, and sustaining the organization’s strategic initiatives. The incumbent in this position will play a key role in UMMA’s organizational strategy, operations, and workforce development. The VP/CSO manages the organization’s growth, acts as a lead change agent, develops and drives the organization’s strategic goals, and implements key strategic initiatives by translating strategies into actionable and quantitative plans. The VP/CSO ensures that daily operations are executed according to UMMA’s policies and procedures and ensures that mission-driven, qualified, and experienced individuals make up UMMA’s workforce talent to ensure the continued success of the organization. The incumbent will act as second in command to the CEO and will have the highest authority should the CEO be unavailable.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Strategy
- Leads the development of the strategic plan/framework for the organization, and the detailed current year operating plan, while adhering to direction set by the CEO and Board of Directors. This includes formalizing and leading the strategic planning process while focusing on sustainable organizational growth
- Provides innovative and forwarding thinking strategic insight to promote UMMA’s long term growth
- Collaborates with CFO to develop capital plan in line with strategy and execution of annual budget
- Communicates strategy effectively throughout leadership team and organization
- Acts as a key advisor to CEO, assists in facilitating effective decision making, and informs CEO of critical changes in organizational development and healthcare organization management
- Leads the development and implementation of consistent practices and strategic frameworks across the organization
- Oversees the development and implementation of a knowledge management infrastructure and leads in the management of organizational knowledge as a strategic asset to further the organization’s goals.
- Leads the organization’s approach to measurement and evaluation with a focus on the creation of an organizational dashboard for impact and organizational effectiveness
- Serves as liaison between staff, executives, senior leaders, and CEO, regarding company climate, employee well-being, project updates, proposals, and planning
Operations and Program Impact
- Oversees daily operations through collaboration with senior management and department leaders, performing an array of administrative tasks including generating correspondences and planning/coordinating executive team meetings
- Builds and develops relationships with all employees for increased efficiency and effective responsiveness into existing operations, and helps to define new operational strategies, working with CEO and executives on special projects
- Serves as a subject matter expert, handling inquiries, and developing action plans to address them, and assisting with the preparation and dissemination of communications
- Leads the organization through rapid, sustainable growth through operational change and transition management
- Partners with senior management to implement and support UMMA’s policies, practices, and programs
- Directs and oversees all aspects of program strategy, planning, and delivery
- Provides leadership, guidance, and innovation to ensure quality, integrity, and continuous improvement of organizational programs and project management
- Leads implementation and review of programmatic aspects of the Strategic Plan and initiates steps to align staff roles, responsibilities, and activities with organizational priorities
- Acts as point person for all regulatory requirements, including but not limited to those set forth by the Human Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
- Oversees managed care initiatives and is responsible for optimization, negotiation, and operational management of managed care contracting strategy on behalf of provider entities
- Oversees organizational contract development and management activities, and enforces organizational principles of compliance
Workforce Development
- Defines a vision and corresponding strategic plan for talent development at UMMA that aligns with the organization’s next multi-year strategic plan;
- Collaboratively develops the structures and systems to build a high performing and inclusive organizational culture
- Drives improvement in overall staff satisfaction, employee engagement and retention across UMMA departments
- Develops and implements effective hiring and employee retention programs
- Participates in regular meetings with the Director of People and Programs to discuss potential staffing issues
- Ensures all staff issues are addressed properly and efficiently according to UMMA policies and procedures and keeps track of progress until resolved
- Develops and grows the organization’s program staff by coaching, retaining, developing, and recruiting high performing team members
- Assists the human resources department with new hires, including documentation and onboarding, and collaborates to address and resolve complex and escalated employee concerns
QUALIFICATIONS/POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s Degree or an equivalent combination of a Bachelor’s degree and experience.
- 5+ years as a senior strategic leader at a nonprofit organization
- Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal
- Has a strong strategy orientation, who has previously held several senior operational leadership roles in fast paced and complex environments. Work experience should include success in a period of growth and/or transition.
- Ability to apply a variety of strategic frameworks to analyze problems and to guide and develop solutions
- Ability to translate and communicate complex topics in a variety of forums, tailoring communications to effectively fit and influence the targeted audience; strong executive presence, presentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to leading the entire range of problem solving work from problem definition to analysis, recommendation, and the development of implementation plans
- Ability to work collaboratively with key internal and external leaders, partners, and community members
- Proven track record with strategy planning, development, and execution
- Strong analytical abilities in order to identify organization strengths and weaknesses and determine areas for improvement and growth
- Strong project management skills in order to oversee the execution of initiatives
