Job Description Summary
This key enterprise role will collaborate with business and cross-functional teams, including product, program and PMO teams, to provide portfolio and resource management processes, information management and reporting/analytics capabilities, enabling critical portfolio decisions at the Project Team, Business Unit, Segment, Region and Enterprise levels. Additionally, this role will be responsible for improving process and technology effectiveness of R&D portfolio management, will be accountable to map out current processes, identify gaps, propose future streamlined processes, provide support for business unit and companywide technology strategy, identify technology solutions and drive change in order to improve the overall effectiveness of the R&D portfolio management, technology alignment, and collaboration functions aligned with BD’s strategic imperatives.
Job Description
This role oversees the development of standards used for portfolio management and related project management activities and ensures the implementation of these standards within the BDX community to meet the Company’s needs. The role will simplify, align and strengthen and/or introduce common processes and technologies as a set of policies, standards, and guidelines. This will include the definition and institutionalization of standard approaches, templates and applications allowing delivery of projects with consistent and predictable results while allowing for flexibility if appropriate in the businesses. Common methodologies and best practices will be enhanced or developed and leveraged across and within business units, making it possible for all stakeholders to work more seamlessly and effectively toward their objectives.
Primary RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build, lead, and continuously develop a highly collaborative, strategically focused center of excellence around portfolio management encompassing processes and technologies from Innovation through marketed products.
- With a strong focus on continuous improvement, implement proven portfolio management best practices, including the development and use of qualitative and quantitative methods for portfolio prioritization, decision tree analysis, and risk assessments (probability of success) in support of portfolio decision making.
- Proactively identify improvements to project and portfolio management and reporting mechanisms in alignment with the VP R&D –Portfolio Management and Innovation Training.
- Ensure Strategic Portfolio Plans align with BD’s values and mission and align with the appropriate BD Strategic Imperatives.
- Enable support of routine and ad-hoc corporate strategic planning activities requiring portfolio inputs in conjunction with the VP R&D – Portfolio Management and Innovation Training.
- Provide solution impacts and approaches for the implementation, ongoing use, support and continuous improvement of the portfolio management solutions and systems. This includes management of all standards and guidelines, licensing and user access, and contributing to cross-BU efforts to ensure corporate policies, standards and guidelines are continually evolving to meet the needs of the business.
- Develop and maintain business capability models and roadmaps aligned to corporate, segment and business unit needs.
- Create and maintain a technology roadmap of systems and tools used and the capabilities they provide, enabling rapid decision-making regarding adoption and integration of existing, and implementation of new technologies.
QUALIFICATIONS
- College degree (BS, MS, MBA or PhD) in a relevant science / technical discipline.
- 15+ years of management experience, with 5+ years of experience in a solution leadership role within a highly matrixed environment.
- 5+ years of experience in a Planview portfolio management role, with demonstrated ability to work with various teams to align processes, information and decision making, generate portfolio level reports and analysis, as well as provide business leadership support for senior portfolio governance bodies.
- 5+ years of experience as a project manager with experience in enterprise program management office (PMO) activities.
- 5+ years of experience interacting with divers, international organizations. Multi-lingual capabilities would be a plus.
- Deep, demonstrated experience with portfolio analytics and financial analysis.
- Experienced in Innovation Methodologies, training approaches and facilitation of complex workshops that drive demonstrable innovation results.
- 5+ year’s active leadership of managing strategic relationships with external partners.
- Proven, experienced leader adept at directing, motivating and facilitating skilled professionals in a dynamic, high pressure environment.
- 5+ year’s involvement in planning and execution of large-scale programs.
- Proven ability to mobilize, motivate and direct a matrix team towards a common vision and common set of objectives.
- Proven ability to resolve conflict (striving for win-win outcomes).
- Proven ability to act independently and to execute with limited information and ambiguity.
- Track record of driving large-scale process improvement and change management initiatives.
- Advanced knowledge and skill with PLM technologies and related tools such as MS Project, MS Excel, Planview Portfolio and Resource Management, and other reporting and tracking tools.
- Demonstrated experience developing and accessing product life-cycle solutions, as well as generating insightful portfolio reports and enabling informed decision making.
- Ability to work cross functionally-with IT, R&D Stakeholders, Finance, Regulatory, Marketing, and Quality in order to embed the agreed processes and quality controls into BD’s systems.
- Able to apply tools and techniques to define problems, assess options, and design solutions.
- Effective at communication, change management and stakeholder management to ensure successful adoption of new processes, behaviors, and tools.
