Job Description
The Energy I-Corps Program Manager will work with a diverse group of stakeholders across the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory system and industry to effectively manage the DOE-sponsored technology accelerator; Energy I-Corps. More than just an accelerator, the Energy I-Corps program represents a unique training and professional development opportunity for DOE laboratory researchers as they seek to find product-market fit for their technology while bringing the benefit of industry insight into their research projects.
The Energy I-Corps program launched in 2015 with the goals of increasing the number of commercialized lab technologies, educating researchers on the needs of industry, and shifting the culture within the labs to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit. Since its inception, the Energy I-Corps program has trained over 100 teams across the country, representing 11 different DOE research labs, and the excitement among our alumni teams is palpable. NREL is looking for a driven, impact-oriented, program manager to build on the success of the program while expanding future program offerings.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Facilitate in-person and web-based training sessions for lab teams; agenda and content development for two 7-week accelerator programs each year
- Keep curriculum current and relevant based on participant feedback and industry best practices
- Manage relationship with multiple DOE program sponsors; facilitate application review and selection process with relevant DOE stakeholders
- Oversee subcontracts in support of the program; industry engagement, teaching team
- Collect program data and manage reporting requirements; program metrics, success stories, participant feedback
- Engage with Energy I-Corps Alumni Association in support of program growth and impact
- Oversee maintenance of the Energy I-Corps website and program presence on relevant social media platforms
- Manage direct DOE-funded program administration budget; develop annual program management plan
- Maintain a culture of continuous improvement
- Act as the face of the program during all in-person training sessions; coordinate between contractors, teaching team, teams, sponsors and stakeholders to ensure the positive, professional and impactful delivery of the program

- Innate ability to build relationships across a geographically diverse network of peers and program stakeholders
- Proficiency in anticipating challenges and finding creative solutions
- Able to articulately communicate program objectives and value; comfortable speaking in front of crowds, drafting written correspondence, and leading webinars
- Comfortable managing up as needed
- Commitment to organization, detail, and quality
- Program/Project management, to include financial tracking and analysis
- Event management oversight

Basic Qualifications
PhD related to the job description.
Or, Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of work experience related to the job description.
Or, Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience related to the job description.

Additional Required Qualifications
Advanced understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices and standards. Advanced knowledge of technical field and related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience level- 10+ years
- Experience within the technology startup ecosystem, preferably within the energy industry
- Understanding of the Lean Launch methodology and the process of Customer Discovery
- Experience with commercializing technologies; particularly within a national laboratory or university
- Experience managing educational/training programs
- Curriculum development and execution
- Management experience across multiple stakeholders and with cross-functional teams
