The Director of Sustainability supports the Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility (CSR) team and reports to the Senior Vice President, Sustainability Programs.
Opportunity Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies or related degree in management or science with an environmental focus.
- LEED AP with EB: O&M specialty.
- LEED documentation experience and project management experience. Preferred: LEED experience with an EB: O&M project.
- Knowledge of environmental management policies, issues and initiatives. Experience with energy, water and waste benchmarking. Preferred: knowledge of LEED Volume programs.
- Strong interpersonal skills, working with diverse groups of individuals and building partnerships.
- Strong communication skills including writing. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly.
- Ability to work independently, be a team leader and work as a member of a team.
- Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, organization and management skills.
- Extreme attention to detail and patience with long project cycles.
- Proficiency in LEED Online and MS Office.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and to work with shifting priorities and schedules.
Summary of Responsibilities
The core responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

LEED project management. Applicable rating systems include
- LEED for Building Operations and Maintenance (LEED O+M)
- LEED for Building Design and Construction (LEED BD+C)
- Health and wellness certifications management (e.g. Fitwel, WELL, etc.)
- Manage achievement of other social and environmental sustainability certifications (e.g. TRUE Zero Waste, ENERGY STAR Certified Buildings, etc.)
- Manage sustainability projects budgets
- Source vendor proposals
- Process funding approval requests for capital projects
- Oversee allocation of funds
- Manage energy, water, and waste data for internal reporting and public disclosures
- Participate in interdepartmental building inspections to identify energy, water and waste efficiency opportunities
- Oversee state and local benchmarking compliance requirements
- Collaborate on the preparation of KRC’s Annual Sustainability Report
- Contribute to all corporate sustainability reporting and investor disclosure efforts. Applicable disclosures include
- GRESB
- CDP
- SASB
- Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI)
- Industry group engagement (e.g. BOMA, USGBC, USGBC-LA, ULI, etc.)
- Support the development of the Kilroy Innovation Lab
- Help set corporate policy around environmental sustainability, social engagement and governance, as appropriate
- Coordinated the development and maintenance of KRC’s Environmental Management System (EMS)
- Onboard newly acquired or developed buildings in Energy Star Portfolio Manager
- Support internal teams with the setting and execution of sustainability goals and objectives
- Participate in interdepartmental building inspections to identify energy, water and waste efficiency opportunities
- Participate in public speaking opportunities (e.g. conferences, industry events, public forums, etc.) to bring awareness to the KRC Sustainability Program
- Assist with marketing and public relations, as appropriate
- Advocacy and engagement with public officials and stakeholders, as appropriate
- Supply and edit content for corporate and individual property websites, intranet sites and social media
- Apply for applicable award and recognition opportunities
- Assist in the development of KRC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives
- Engage in Supply Chain optimization initiatives
- Other duties as assigned.
