High performing leadership teams are characterized by effective CEO leadership and a team of experienced functional and business managers that demonstrate alignment and collaboration in their pursuit of shared goals. There is clarity on strategy, common understanding of culture, agility when it comes to working in ad hoc groups on special projects, and a high level of commitment to organizational outcomes. A key figure in successful leadership teams is the Chief of Staff who serves on behalf of the CEO as an integrator of the team, improving processes across functional domains, recognizing and managing areas for improvement, and advancing the strategic agenda. The Chief of Staff manages communications within the team and between the top team and the lower levels of management. She/he ensures a process and structure for critical decision making, but one that does not unnecessarily impair organizational agility.
