Principal Responsibilities:

The Joan and Alan Bernikow Jewish Community Center of Staten Island (JCC) seeks a passionate and imaginative CEO to provide strategic and visionary leadership. The CEO will possess strong fundraising, management, and community building skills, and will lead the $29M organization comprised of multiple revenue streams with over 200 full-time and 300 part-time professionals in the Metropolitan New York City Borough of Staten Island.

The Joan and Alan Bernikow Jewish Community Center of Staten Island is dedicated to the enhancement of the quality of life on Staten Island by providing for the social, cultural, educational, recreational, health and wellness and social service needs of the community. The Bernikow Jewish Community Center provides a common meeting place and extends these services as a resource for the entire Jewish and general community of Staten Island. The JCC promotes the physical and mental well-being of the community and offers a rich array of stimulating and innovative social, cultural, educational, and recreational programs and services as well as essential social services in the areas of; literacy, food insecurity, counseling, case management and an array of services to populations with disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

The new CEO will possess aptitude in the following areas:

Strategic and Visionary Leadership

• Provide strategic and visionary leadership and innovative strategies that put Jewish values at the core of a vibrant, diverse Bernikow JCC
• Develop, maintain, and support a strong, diverse, and inclusive Board of Directors and cultivate an effective and transparent working relationship with the Board
• Build strong and lasting relationships between the BernikowJCC, other Jewish and broader community organizations, donors, members, elected officials, government agencies, and other important stakeholders

Financial Resource Development

• Serve as the chief fundraiser for the Bernikow JCC, working closely with the Board of Directors and the Fundraising and Grant Development teams to cultivate, steward and support relationships with major donors and key funders, local, national, and corporate foundations and UJA Federation of New York
• Nurture the Bernikow JCCs long track record and continue to seek funding opportunities through city, state, and federal grants

Financial Management

• Oversight of all financial matters including annual and long-term budgeting, ongoing financial performance and financial strategy
• Understand how to acquire and organize data and apply metrics to provide accountability and drive results
• Develop in partnership with the Finance Committee and Board a realistic budget
• Supervise and work with the CFO to establish fiscally responsible short and long-range goals
• Use financial statements to guide and oversee agency performance and financial sustainability

Qualifications

• Dynamic and inspirational leader capable of engaging key stakeholders and audiences of varying sizes and interests
• Proven ability to build strong and lasting partnerships with Jewish, corporate, government and other organizations
• Proven track record of fundraising success, including knowledge of and participation in: individual donor development, planned giving, grant procurement; capital campaigns; corporate sponsorship and special events
• Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach and manage staff in multiple locations and develop high-performance teams and set and achieve strategic objectives
• Strong analytical skills and ability to work with financial data to make key decisions
• Ability to develop and drive both short- and long-term strategy for the organization
• Comfort in serving as the public face of the organization; can be relied upon to deliver messages with tact, diplomacy and appropriate messaging
• Appreciation and real commitment to diversity; works easily with a broad range of people across all aspects of diversity
• Past success working with a Board of Directors, committees and volunteers with the ability to cultivate existing relationships and develop new ones
• Strong familiarity with and affection for Jewish culture and practices
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills

Requirements

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with 7-10 years of experience in Jewish communal or nonprofit field; proven success in senior management and leadership roles
• Proven record of community engagement

The Joan and Alan Bernikow Building is the JCC’s Flagship facility located in the middle of Staten Island on a 32-acre property surrounded by a 150-acre park. At 120,000 square feet, the Bernikow Building is the largest recreational facility on Staten Island. In addition to the Bernikow Building, the JCC provides services at the Nancy and Ronald Avis Building, and rents and provides services in over 30 locations on Staten Island. The JCC plays an essential role in the social service, cultural, informal education, and recreational aspects of the community.

Staten Island is a borough of New York City located in the state of New York. The borough which is also referred to as Richmond County has a population of 476,179 and is the least populated of the five boroughs, but the third largest in land area, boasting acres of parks, greenbelts, blue belts and wet-lands. The North Shore is the urban part of the island and the South Shore is mostly suburban. Staten Island is 30 minutes from Manhattan and is conveniently located within a few hours’ drive of the Hamptons in Long Island, the New Jersey Shore, and the Pocono Mountains and Philadelphia, both in Pennsylvania.
