University Advancement (UA) supports the entire CMU community in securing the financial resources the university needs to continue its ascent. As the division grows, we are seeking an Associate Vice President, College Development and Campus Initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will collaborate with the deans and college- and school-based advancement staff to develop and elevate development and alumni relations programs for each of Carnegie Mellon University’s seven colleges, including fundraising strategies, campaign priorities, budget and staffing models, volunteer fundraising boards, and metrics and analysis.
Central to this role is demonstrated effectiveness in collaboration. As a leader of university-wide development efforts, you must support academic and administrative leadership in expanding opportunities and the range of CMU connections with its constituencies, and will need to work closely and creatively with school and college-based faculty and advancement staff in this process. You will foster a culture of communication and cooperation with the faculty and staff in CMU’s schools and colleges and with other university stakeholders. In partnership with the senior associate vice president for development, you will aim to ensure school and college-based programs are coordinated with central fundraising programs to maximize engagement and fundraising results. You will oversee campus initiatives and assist in the development of fundraising plans for strategic, university-wide initiatives identified by the president and provost including athletics, libraries and student affairs.
You will focus on achieving the goals and strategic priorities of the university through the generation of philanthropic gifts. Reporting to the vice president for University Advancement, you will be an active member of the University Advancement division’s management team and will serve as a primary development liaison to deans and other unit heads.

Your core responsibilities will include
:

  • Serving as an active member of University Advancement’s divisional management team and collaborating with division leadership peers to achieve division-wide goals.
  • Collaborating with the deans and college- and school-based advancement staff to develop and elevate development and alumni relations programs for each of Carnegie Mellon University’s seven colleges, including fundraising strategies, campaign priorities, budget and staffing models, volunteer fundraising boards, and metrics and analysis.
  • In partnership with senior associate vice president for development, ensuring school-based programs are coordinated with central fundraising programs to maximize engagement and fundraising results.
  • Managing the senior director for campus initiatives and assisting in the development of fundraising plans for strategic, university-wide academic initiatives identified by the president and provost including athletics, libraries, and student affairs.
  • Managing a portfolio of gift prospects and leads the team by example with a high level of major and principal gift productivity in the campaign.
  • Leading, coaching, and evaluating the performance of direct reports.
  • Helping to maximize effectiveness across all levels of the organization through other duties as assigned.

You should be able to travel both domestically and internationally and be willing to work outside of normal business hours as needed.


Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in development, with at least five of those years in management, preferably including experience as a the chief advancement officer of a school or college in a complex research university; advanced knowledge of major gift fundraising and capital campaigns; demonstrated success in developing and managing relationships with academic leaders, volunteer leadership and major donors/prospects; strong supervisory, coaching, and mentoring skills; cultural appreciation and sensitivity in interacting with a diverse alumni population both domestically and internationally; in-depth knowledge of university governance, administration and operations; ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic development plans and achieve revenue results; and demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.


Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and successfully complete a driver’s license verification on an annual basis. Must complete the National Safety Council Defensive Driver Training once every three years.
