Job Summary

A research group at the School of Education seeks a multimedia-experienced individual with interpersonal and leadership skills to help organize and manage data-intensive research focused on issues of social justice in K-12 mathematics education. Our team is committed to understanding and challenging privilege and oppression in education, primarily in relation to race and gender. Our projects investigate mathematics teaching and learning that disrupt racism, marginalization, and inequity. The professional we seek will lead day-to-day coordination of project-related tasks, collaborate with research team members to achieve project goals, and oversee the management of multimedia datasets of K-12 instruction. In particular, the research project manager will establish and monitor workflow and timelines; develop procedures and protocols for data collection, analysis, storage, and access; and oversee technical staff responsible for processing, storing, and sharing large datasets.

Responsibilities*

Organize and oversee day-to-day activities, plan and document workflow, establish and monitor timelines, facilitate communication among faculty, graduate students, staff, and study participants, and assist team members with technical or logistical tasks, including scheduling, planning, and IT support.

Establish rapport, communicate directly, and problem-solve with project staff and participants, including interacting with sensitivity in conducting project work in diverse communities and with individuals who may have different backgrounds, skills, and needs and equitably distributing tasks and opportunities related to the project.

Manage the collection and processing of high-quality records of K-12 classroom instruction.

Recruit participants in K-12 schools, schedule school visits, arrange travel, and oversee communication and working relations with participant communities.

Work with technical staff to establish schedules, routines, and training of team members for collecting and storing photographs, document scans, teacher and student interviews, and video and sound capture with mixing that supports observation of instruction.

Oversee technical staff responsible for post-production video editing, data de-identification (video, photographs, images), transcription, and documentation and help facilitate such work.

Investigate issues related to and advise project staff regarding audiovisual equipment, software, and research tools for multimedia data collection and analysis.

Manage ongoing analyses and long-term storage and sharing of high-quality records of K-12 classroom instruction.

Debrief data collection and develop routines and schedules for analyses.

Oversee technical staff responsible for storage, back-up, preservation, and metadata archiving of project datasets and help facilitate such work.

Develop safeguards, protection, and security processes for appropriate data storage, access, and sharing that comply with consent and use agreements.

Design and implement procedures and protocols for data access and sharing of large multimedia datasets and document them for use by researchers.

Work with others in the university to learn how to do key administrative tasks (e.g., hiring and supervising undergraduate workers and other technical staff, managing the Institutional Review Board process, maintaining project member appointments, reimbursing expenses, processing payments, and basic purchasing).

Plan and manage occasional events, such as project workshops, activities with visitors, and advisory board meetings.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree, with a strong background in project management

Demonstrated ability to establish rapport, communicate directly, and problem-solve in collaboratives

Experience with data management or audiovisual technology

Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, as well as a demonstrated ability to interact with sensitivity in diverse contexts and communities

Demonstrated project management, supervisory, and administrative skills

Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, personal initiative, and ability to learn on the job

Demonstrated ability to attend to multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines

A strong orientation toward collaborative work and the ability to oversee and direct a team

Flexibility in working hours and ability to work independently with limited day-to-day oversight

Desired Qualifications*

Experience working in K-12 educational settings

Knowledge of University of Michigan research policies and operations

Availability for occasional travel to support data collection and remote meetings or conferences

Experience capturing complex interactions with video and audio recording

Familiarity with relevant technical software (e.g., data management software, software for editing audio/video)

Experience designing, developing, and/or implementing multimedia data management systems

Salary and Term of Appointment:
Salary is commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate, with an expected annual salary of $50,000-$65,000, but we encourage all interested parties to apply. Please note this is a three-year, term-limited position with the potential for renewal depending upon success in the role and availability of funding.

Physical demands:
The person in this position must be able to sit or stand at a desk for long periods of time. Additionally, they must be able to operate a computer and other office equipment. This includes the ability to inspect video, audio, and other multimedia data. This person may also be required to occasionally lift and/or transport lightweight audio/video equipment (up to 20 lbs.) as part of the project activities.
