Description
Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Research (SVPR) the Vice President for Research Collaborations (VPRC) assists the SVPR in developing the university-wide strategy for the research enterprise at Emory.
Has responsibility for working with the SVPR and collaborating with the Office of the Provost in supporting development of strategies for interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research, and research related creativity and scholarship.
- Oversees the development, updating, implementation, education and communication of research policies, and partners with the Provost’s Office, Schools and Units to disseminate information.
- Engages broadly with faculty from the health sciences, colleges and professional schools to advance support of their research and creativity with a focus on fostering interdisciplinary research collaborations.
- Serves as an advisor on the Research Leadership Team to the SVPR.
- Primary among the VPRC’s responsibilities is to assist in creating an environment that engages, supports and rewards collaborative research among investigators from the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and health sciences.
- Works closely with the SVPR and Provost’s Office to fully align research with the overall academic mission of Emory University. Ensures and collaborates with key stakeholders on the development and updates of policies to keep pace with government and funding agency mandates regarding issues of foreign influence, research cybersecurity, visiting scholars, etc.
- Implements faculty communication and education strategies and facilitates the ability of schools and units to monitor adherence to research policies and procedures.
- Collaborates with IT on appropriate issues of research cybersecurity and with the audit team on research related audits.
- Engages the SVPR’s Research Council in presentation and monitoring of faculty research/scholarship mission metrics that can be supported by the Office of the SVPR, and advises on ways in which the Office of the SVPR can support and raise faculty research/scholarship to eminence.
- Ensures that faculty research compliance, training and support services are included in orientation for new faculty.
- Supervises direct reports including the Director of the Office of Training Grants and works to increase support for and submission of training grants.
- Chairs the Research Risk Management Committee and Chair or Co-chair Research Review Committee for Pilot Grants and Ad Hoc opportunities.
- Assists the SVPR in working with key stakeholders on developing a consistent reporting, application and support structure for research centers/institutes.
- Works with the SVRP to increase external collaborations that enhance the Emory innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem.
- As a key leader advancing Emory’s research agenda, the VPRC is a member of the SVPR Research Leadership Team and works closely with the Vice President for Research Administration, and other SVPR RLT members regarding the management of the research enterprise. Works closely with the Associate Deans for Research and Faculty across all schools/units, the Vice Provost for Strategic Initiatives, and the Vice President for Research in Woodruff Health Sciences regarding supporting the research enterprise.
- May serve as a primary liaison for the SVPR on relevant university committees or represent the SVPR at university, national and international meetings as needed.
- Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor, with a distinguished record of academic and research achievements.
- Must be a highly respected academic leader with a record in academic leadership, research, education, scholarship, and service necessary for overseeing the many facets of the research enterprise at Emory.
- Extensive knowledge of and experience with research funding.
- An understanding of the importance of compliance and regulatory matters to the research enterprise, and the ability to develop an effective strategy for assisting faculty in meeting regulations.
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting equity, inclusion, and diversity.
- Strong analytical skills that complement a commitment to create and facilitate new approaches to enhancing collaborative research.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
